I have a lot to say as you can imagine, but right now I'll say this:

I didn't "know" this was coming, but I did. And a week or two ago when I almost shut down the board and the site, that was why. I haven't been able to listen to Collapse in a while, nor any REM because it made me sad.

I'll have to compose up some thoughts later, but too much right now :/

thanks for not doing that, and thanks for everything you put into this site, i know we had our differences but this community wouldn't have been the same without the time and effort you put into this site
and i prolly wouldn't have met all these great peeps.

REM were my peers. They were with me as I matured from my early 20's till now. Though we were politically on opposite sides of the spectrum there music has been as big a part of my life as anything else. This is an emotional day.

No I don't think so -- here's the full quote:

Quote

"During our last tour, and while making Collapse Into Now and putting together this greatest hits retrospective, we started asking ourselves, 'what next'? Working through our music and memories from over three decades was a hell of a journey. We realized that these songs seemed to draw a natural line under the last 31 years of our working together.

Obviously CIN is a separate project from "this greatest hits retrospective."

I spent 2/3 of my life with R.E.M.
This is such a bad day, one that I will remember for the rest of my life.
Thank you, R.E.M.? Yes, of course, thank you, THANK YOU! But not now. Now is for the grief.

I don't know what to say. I would be lying if I said I didn't see this coming but I'm still in shock. R.E.M. is a big part of my life (it always will be) and knowing that they will never tour again and will never make any other records just guts me.
However, if they decided to call it day, so be it. If they feel that the thrill has gone, fair enough. I can't wait to hear the unreleased material and I'm looking forward to any stuff the members will involved in.
Thank you R.E.M., you helped me go through the crappiest moments of my life and you made the happiest ones even better. I love you guys.

Brings illuminating vision
It's the knowing with a wink
That we expect in Southern women

It's the octopus that crawled back to the sea.

I bet it's because Peter wore something age inappropriate...

Wonder what will happen to the fan club now?

I think Mike's nudie-suits were age appropriate way back when...maybe it was a culmination of age inappropriate clothing.

I'm crying... :(  REM give meaning to my life every day, they are part of my life.
It will be tough to get used to the idea of a world without them, but I hope they come back together soon.

Thankyou Mike, Michael, Peter and Bill. Immortal music.

Ethan was quoted in the just-updated Rolling Stone article:

http://www.rollingst...ecades-20110921

"Ethan Kaplan, owner of the R.E.M. fan community Murmurs and former Senior Vice President of Emerging Technology at Warner Bros. Records, says that the band's decision was influenced in part by label politics. "I suspected this was coming last fall," Kaplan tellsRolling Stone. "If you remember, they weathered a lot of storms in this business, and have always operated on their own terms. [Warner Bros.] changed starting last September, and I think the demands on a band now to get a record out were more than they might have wanted to commit. I can understand that after how hard they worked for how long, the thought of going back to 'paying dues' with new label staff, in a very weird industry, was too much."

But I thought their contract was up? They could have done their own thing, ala Radiohead, Wilco, or any number of bands.

Well, I cannot say, I am really surprised about this.
It's odd to think that R.E.M. are history now.
On the other hand, I've often had the feeling they should have called it a day back in 1997 after Bill left.
I don't know, I've always loved their music, on the other hand, I've also always had the feeling that after Bill's departure, they never managed to really get back into form.

Now I am waiting for the infamous Box Set, they've promised, with all the great outtakes over the years...this should be nothing short of Johnny Cash's Unearthed.

So very sad.  I knew this day would come and I expected it would hit me like a ton of bricks but now that it has happened it's just sadness and disappointment.  For me, not them.  There have certainly been signs that the band members were ready to move on and all the best to them.  They have a lot to be proud of and have earned their place in music history.

For me, it's a loss. No new R.E.M. albums to anticipate, no more tours to look forward to, the excitement of the show and even the queues, no more meeting up with all the wonderful fans I've met from all over the world.  From almost every continent now that I think of it.  I'll still have the music that I've felt so connected to and has seen me through good times and bad but it's hard to imagine there will be no more.  I don't know if I will ever feel quite the same connection to another band.

Thanks always to R.E.M. for all you've brought to my life.

Completely stunned. Just a favorite relative or sick friend you know this day would come but you are never quite ready for it.
