I live in Raleigh now but these photos were taken along the Crystal Coast of NC (in Emerald Isle and Swansboro, respectively) where my family had property from the early 70s up until 2005. After Hurricane Ophelia in 2005, we finally decided to sell. If FEMA would have given us the funds to put our home up on stilts, I'd probably still be living there. Instead, we always had to rebuild after every storm. After Ophelia, we had enough and parted with our property along the Intracoastal Waterway.

"We were listening to the UNC radio (station) there and they were playing an R.E.M. song. I like R.E.M. fine, but at the end of it, the DJ says, 'Ya that was R.E.M., the sound of the new South'. I looked at my roommate and we said, Gawd, if that's the sound of the new South, I preferred it when it was on the skids. That's how we got the name."
