From Remhq:
This morning, a message from Michael on behalf of the band, an a cappela chorus from Man on the Moon he recorded for the occasion, and the studio version of Man on the Moon were transmitted to space to the last shuttle crew as part of their morning wake-up songs.
A recording of Michael's message can be heard here:

And as posted in another thread, here's a video as well (not with JMS, but with some nice words about the band from the astronauts):

No tickling the lead singer when he is reaching for a note that he can no longer hit, OK?" JMS, post-audience visit during The One I Love in Bergen, 2008

So what are the astronauts doing this time up there? Digging for Transformers?

I think that's great. I'd love to be waked up by that if I were an astronaut.

Surreal and sweet. I'll bet he never imagined doing *that*.
I think Kaufman would have loved it, no?

I wondered about that. The message is just JMS, and the album thing didn't say the others were there. Probably isn't what he was recording, just interesting.
According to HQ the NASA message was recorded in Italy while Rolling Stone reported he was in Athens recording for the next R.E.M. record.
"We were listening to the UNC radio (station) there and they were playing an R.E.M. song. I like R.E.M. fine, but at the end of it, the DJ says, 'Ya that was R.E.M., the sound of the new South'. I looked at my roommate and we said, Gawd, if that's the sound of the new South, I preferred it when it was on the skids. That's how we got the name."

Michael was in Venice in early June: http://www.gettyimag...=michael stipe#
Maybe Micahel/R.E.M.'s presence in the studio was due to an upcoming greatest hits? You know, usually greatest hits have 1 or 2 unpublished songs and...maybe they are recording the unpublished ones? Of course I still hope for a new album.

What a nice idea!
I laugh when I think about it, though... if I was one of the astronauts up there, I'd be all excited-- and then I'd be sad that Mike didn't record a message too.
I like Michael and Peter, but Mike Mills is worth launching myself into space for.
LOL. : )

"I wound up figuring out something that I had never been able to figure out before, which was: who am I after R.E.M.? I now know, and I’m OK with it. I’m just not a whole lot without them. I’ve got a nice voice and good cheekbones, but without those guys writing songs with me, I don’t know that anyone would ever hear what I have to say.” . . ---Michael Stipe

Michael was at the Venice Bienalle in June, indeed. I have no clue where he is now.

I saw someone that looks an awful lot like him ordering a cheeseburger at Cookout in Raleigh during lunch.

I'd be surprised if they were releasing a greatest hits album. In Time came out in 2003, so there would only really be material from Around the Sun, Accelerate and Collapse Into Now on there, unless it's Warner's last throw of the R.E.M. cash cow dice...

"Get Up" or "Wake Up Bomb" would also have been a good alarm for the crew.

A short documentary by the European Space Agency discusses music in space:
"But now you're here and it's different, how the light shines in your eyes, and every second a century, it's then that I realized, the world as we know it, a high speed train, we'll pick it up and start again"
