"We were listening to the UNC radio (station) there and they were playing an R.E.M. song. I like R.E.M. fine, but at the end of it, the DJ says, 'Ya that was R.E.M., the sound of the new South'. I looked at my roommate and we said, Gawd, if that's the sound of the new South, I preferred it when it was on the skids. That's how we got the name."

Tried it once, and knew straight away that I just didn't have it! Sometimes, you need to know when to walk away in life...

It didn't come to me right away either, it involved a bit of practice but it's like riding a bicycle, once you learn, it stays with you for life. I had lost interest in skateboarding over the years but picked it back up a couple of years ago. Definitely a much cheaper way to have a mid-life crisis than buying a Ferrari.

Ha, I know what you mean. I'm into road cycling, which now has its own acronym over here - MAMIL - middle aged man in lycra.

Good to hear you got back into it, and very cool poster.

This is some old 8mm home movie footage set to a soundtrack that includes Deep Purple. If you like what you see here be sure to check out DrAbalone's channel on YouTube as there's lots more where this came from. A must for any fan of skateboarding and surfing.

12 year old Tom Schaar, the first skateboarder to ever land a 1080:

Two things that go great together; Megafaun's "Real Slow" and old skateboarding footage:

Really hated to hear this news as Tom Sims has long been one of my favorite skaters as well as being a huge innovator in the world of skateboarding itself. Just a few years ago when I started getting back into skateboarding I had my old Sims board re-outfitted with new trucks and wheels. It's a board I've had since I was just a little kid but I'm still riding it to this day thanks to updating it with new equipment. It's a testament to Tom Sims' craftsmanship that it's even still around.
