I think he played it more because it's become sort of the official song of the rapture, not because he's a fan. Not to mention if he was really a fan he would have gone to the trouble of actually learning it. After all, this is the same guy that said, ""How can The Replacements be the best band of the 80s when I've never even heard of them?" Maybe I'm in the minority here but I thought his version of it was atrocious and did a tremendous disservice to the original. If you're gonna do it, at least do it right.
"We were listening to the UNC radio (station) there and they were playing an R.E.M. song. I like R.E.M. fine, but at the end of it, the DJ says, 'Ya that was R.E.M., the sound of the new South'. I looked at my roommate and we said, Gawd, if that's the sound of the new South, I preferred it when it was on the skids. That's how we got the name."

I just read that same anecdote today.

Does anyone remember some early onstage in-between song banter (I don't remember which song or on what album) where Michael Stipe is telling a story about it being the end of the world, or maybe just a big storm, and he doesn't want to be sitting there listening to Bon Jovi on the radio? "We are going to die listening to Bon Jovi?" Then someone heckles him and he responds with, "shut up, shut up and shut up."
Man, if anyone could find this I would be grateful. I did my best on YouTube but didn't come up with anything.

OMG.
Not as horrific as I expected, however.
Fair play.

I'm going with Mr. Tweedy's take on the subject.

I actually quite enjoyed it...but I'm a lifelong Bon Jovi fan and a lifelong REM fan so that would make sense for me to like it. They do that alot though where they play parts of songs that they seem to not know quite perfectly but kind od improvise, so I'm not surprised he butchered the lyrics...actually I was surpised he got as much of them right as he did.

Bon Jovi are vaguely ridiculous, but I loved Jon's soundtrack to Young Guns 2 and Crossroads is a great best of oh-my-god-I-actually-like-all-the-songs-on-here album.
I know a song that will get on your nerves.

I have this, & have attached it here for you (very low bitrate mp3 to allow for uploading to murmurs).

I had this as a video on YouTube a few years back, when I was active as REMdave. Unfortunately, the likes of MTV etc had my page shut down for uploading the rare footage from their network. Shame though, it seemed to be quite a popular R.E.M. page!

Anyway, enjoy this.

Hey!!! Thank you!!!

I was beginning to think I was crazy for remembering that story--yes, it was an earthquake, how could I forget? And not just a slam on Bon Jovi, but Whitesnake, Heart, and U2...boo, hiss..the crowd did not like that one. Sounds like Michael had a shit-eating grin on his face while he told that story.

I subscribed to your channel back in the day, Dave, and was bummed they took it down. There was some great stuff there. Thanks again for this.

I dont mind Bon Jovi classics songs. Go to youtube and listen to Pavarotti and Jon sing let it rain. The best thing you will hear all day.
