I say Mil-shzin- Caddy. Sorry if you can't pronounce the middle syllable, it was as close as I could get to spelling it.

WTF people? You don't have to say it out loud!

If you must, it's "Mill-Shawn Kay-Dee"

But if that makes your butt itch then call me Molly.

Criminy.

A whole thread.

I always read milsean candy, but thought milsean was "from mills" for some reason, so it's read "candy from mills". You burst the bubble and now I want candy. :(:(:(

Hey, I was curious. I  say user names in my head, and  as you can see, everybody was pronouncing your user nick a different way, and getting it wrong. No butt itch, just a wish for clarification.

Oh, I always thought it had something to do with pulling a bag of golf clubs.

:o No...I hate golf!

Sorry, just caught off-gaurd by the thread, I guess.

It's a name of a fictional character that I always found very pretty and Irish but I am about as Irish as Jackie Chan, so I don't know that it suits me anyhow.

I have had some horrible mess-ups with how I pronounce things as well, having never heard them spoken. I do say people's usernames aloud in my head as well, and there are a couple on here that I have no idea about.

I used to pronouce Sean as 'Seen' until I learnt it was a version of Shawn.  Anyway, Milsean Cady - rather unique and interesting use name!

mill-shawn..??  really?  I would never have got that.

I thought it was a take on Mills too.  I had some elaborate reasoning that related to Patti Smith's song, "My Blakean Year".

My nephew's name is Sean and he was visiting recently and I said, "the spelling of your name is kinda funny, when you think about it...how come it's spelled like that? it doesn't make sense."  He shrugged as only a 14 year old boy can shrug, but at the time he was on his laptop so he was secretly Googling and as it happens Sean comes from Jean [french for John] when you pronounce it with a french accent it does kinda sound like 'shawn'.  So really his name is John - this discovery didn't seem to please him much.  I started calling him John-o [as is obligatory in the aussie vernacular], which resulted in a raised eyebrow and glares in my general direction.

Irish names never look the same as they sound to non Irish people. Having said that, they are some of the most beautiful names once you figure out how to pronounce them.
Who would look at Siobhan and think "Sha-Vawn"? Reading it gives no clues really.

I think Siobhan is one of the most common girl's name in Ireland. I might be wrong. I tried to teach myself Gaelic as a teenager...yeah, that didn't work out very well. I think it's a lovely sounding language, though.

So,This name I've got we all agreed.

Whoa, that candy looks munchy as hell.  Must. not. look. at. tasty. treats. I want to lose a few lbs before summer really kicks in.
Back to names, one of the most baffling to me was a schoolmate of one of my kids. A girl named Grainne.
She got called "Granny" a lot, not to be mean but because that's what it looked like to English eyes, which was frustrating for her, poor girl. Turns out it's pronounced roughly as Gron- nia (rhymes with Sonia).
How about this-- Aoibheann? Spoken, it's Eve-een, which is really pretty.

That is really pretty. But it would suck to have a pretty name no one could pronounce.

I always loved the song, "Óró, Sé do Bheatha 'Bhaile." It's pronounced "Oro, shey do vaha wallya." Go figure.

ok, I was thinking Mill-zee-ann Kay-dee.

For the record, my user name is pronounced as follows:

K as in knight
E as in game
L as in could
L as in would
Y as in say
A as in cocoa
