I found this back around the time of Record Store Day but was unable to post it. In any event, this is from the Cult of The Record Bar page on Facebook. It was taken at a meet and greet at the Record Bar warehouse (which I think was located in Durham, NC):

For anyone that's interested, Record Bar was a chain of record stores that were located throughout the Southeast (and perhaps even beyond) but they folded sometime in the 90s or early 00s. The Cult of The Record Bar group on FB is geared towards former employees of Record Bar but is open to anyone to join. I didn't have a Record Bar in my town but I did shop at the one in Jacksonville, NC (and sometimes Raleigh) pretty regularly. Even though I never worked there, it's cool to be a member of the group just to read their stories and to see many vintage Record Bar photos such as the one above featuring Buck and Kinney. I have several R.E.M. related memories from Record Bar, including buying Document at Tracks (Record Bar went through several name changes towards the end) at Jacksonville Mall the day it came out. I'll never forget hearing them playing "Welcome To the Occupation" over the sound system when I first entered the store.
"We were listening to the UNC radio (station) there and they were playing an R.E.M. song. I like R.E.M. fine, but at the end of it, the DJ says, 'Ya that was R.E.M., the sound of the new South'. I looked at my roommate and we said, Gawd, if that's the sound of the new South, I preferred it when it was on the skids. That's how we got the name."

Everyone sing along: It's the 80's, do a lot of coke and vote for Ronald Reagan!

That's a cool picture and if one could build a time machine and go have a beer in a plastic cup with Petey back then...well, one would do it. Wouldn't one?

I think it seems that Kevn has in fact retained more water than Peter since then...

This must be around 89 sometime, or?

Hell, no need for a time machine, I'd do it now, like a shot. I've always thought Peter was the member I'd most like to meet and shoot the breeze with. He's very pithy.

Not sure of the exact date but I'm guessing it was from when they were out touring together for Macdougal Blues which I believe was around that same time period.

Right on. I hear ya.

Though if given a choice, I'm gonna hang with Bill Berry. Throw a couple soyburgers on the grill, crack a cold one and catch some Andy Griffith reruns. Hell yes.

I want to share a story. Sometime approx. 1998 I was at Hal & Mal's in Jackson, MS to see Kevin Kinney play his acoustic set.  At the time, every night he would at some point in his set ask for a female or two from the audience to join him and sing back-up.  Well, no one stepped forward at first, then finally after some prodding by his friends, Mike Mills walked up to the stage.  Kevin just about fell down laughing and shocked.  Kevin said "What the hell are you doing here?"  Mike explained he was visiting friends or family, and they played and sang "Straight to Hell" together.  I was impressed that Mike knew every word!  They had an audience of perhaps fifty people, but I 'll never forget it!
