melancholy over the death of one of the most evil people of the last 100 years.

Sorry there is a misunderstanding of my post so I want to step in here.

I don't care if the guy lives or doesn't. So the "melancholy" is not about that.

Here in Germany, there is the principle of 'innocent till proven', and this means, proven in a court of justice.

Now don't get me wrong again and say I said Bin Laden was innocent. This is exactly not what I'm saying. But ideally, he should have been judged in front of a court and not shot before. It is sad that this court case did not happen.

The news about how this event happened was only released later in the news, thus Driver Nate writing what he had read, and at this stage I had read it, too (as I wrote).

What I was basically saying, and this is because my first impression was that Bin Laden was killed because he was meant to be killed in the first place, and because of Guantanamo is that these people should get a chance to get a court case, like a state of justice would grant them, of course. What I was saying is that the U.S. should stick to such higher principles.

Hope it's easier to understand now.

What I find sad is the needless deaths of countless civilians brought about both by this modern ogre and the reaction of the rest of the world to his existence.  How many Afghanis, Americans, Brits, Spaniards, Iraqis, Pakistanis, etc... died as a result of his actions and our dumb-as-rocks reactions to them?  How many trillions of dollars did the world blow up that could have gone toward making a world where terrorism would have no appeal whatsoever?

Pretty darned happy he no longer walks the earth - if you're feeling ambivalent please watch his post-9/11 video.  But the reasons America is targeted, hated, and feared remain.

Well said. I wish I, or anyone else, had a good answer.

For me, this is an end to a chapter and an opportunity to move forward in a more intelligent way. * bites cynical tongue *

From what I just heard on the radio he refused to go peacefully, therefore leaving no other alternative than to shoot him.
I agree.

Those people celebrating in the streets aren't at all representative of how I feel about the situation. While it's a relief that he was finally found, I can't get behind celebrating his (or anyone's) death no matter how evil they may have been. I have some friends on Facebook that lean very heavily to the right and today I find myself having to bite my tongue even more than usual. I know I have every right to speak my mind but in this case, I think I'm better off to keep my thoughts to myself even though it's extremely difficult to do so.

I had to remove a bunch of people off of facebook after this event, because I couldn't respect myself for being "friends" with people who are so stupid.
