I have had some good news today - I'd last heard from a Japanese college friend a few years back that he was living in Minamasoma Fukishima. We had lost touch, but I e-mailed the old address on Monday to see if he was okay. Got a reply today! He is being evacuated from where he is, but at least I know that he is alive. I am so very relieved.

That's great news C.A. Am sure stories like these must lift peoples spirits.
Quiet girl, I just can't imagine what you and your nation are going through and am sure that everyone here is thinking of you all and will donate what they can. Try to stay strong, although how you do that in your situation, I just don't know

Anxiety over food and water supplies has surged in Japan on reports radiation from the tsunami-damaged nuclear plant has seeped into the water supply
Discussions have been going on here in Australia about whether we should go towards nuclear energy since our government is introducing a carbon tax that many don't want. The nuclear energy experts say that it's safe with the more modern reactors What's happened in Japan scares me though, I realize that it's supposed to be cleaner energy and all but still you know, it's a risk. I think what one can do is try to use less power, go solar or wind but you need the elements all year round to make it work when you want it to and also it's difficult in these modern times given that a lot things we rely on are electronically driven.
I get shaken when I read about the loss of life and the trauma that Japan is going through.

Hi I haven't been around here for so long but one of my mates from here sent an email to me, so I pop in and just want to let those who recoginize me that I'm fine. But as you all may know northeast part of Japan is devastated. Millions of people missing and we have no idea how many of them will be on the whole. The earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear power plant. OMG.
I was thinking of you as well, and am glad to find out that you are fine. My husband's family are all safe as well, though they are still having some small quakes or aftershocks, I understand. We were watching NHK the other night and wondering what in the world peole will do about all the debris left behind after the tsunami.

Hello and thank you for your concern. I'm glad your husband's family are all safe, that's a relief.
We are still having small quakes since that day and now we are in the middle of the nuclear power plant crisis.I try to spend everyday as much as it used to be but nobody knows what will come next. Sometimes I feel so...what shall I explain? I feel like there's nothing I can do and what I'm doing right now is all meaningless. Quite blank minded.
What I'm going through and experiencing and feeling is REALLY nothing compared to what is happening in Tohoku area.

Things turn out to be worse and worse (judged by what I see on the media everyday). But surely we hear and have helping voices and hands from all over the world.

It seems to be really really bad there. The death toll keeps climbing, the radiation situation isn't solved, the aftershocks continue.... We've been keeping an eye on NHK and I was so touched at the video of little ladies wielding shovels, trying to clean mud and debris out of their homes, not just sitting back and waiting for the government to come help. Strong people there.

You're the first person I thought of when it happened. I'm glad to hear you're doing relatively ok considering.
Then I thought of Lucy's husband's family, then of my oldest daughter who is scheduled to go to Hakodate in June for a summer semester. I hope things can be worked out soon for everyone concerned.
On a side note, couldn't they pump the contaminated water back into the reactor to cool it? Not a long term solution, but it might significantly reduce the amount of new contaminated water and the need to store the old..

Thank you very much for your warm concern and am glad you recognize me though I haven't been around here for very long
Here in Tokyo it seems getting back usual condition step by step. But every time I see the situation gets worse I'm in shocked condition and what I mean to say it's like shell-shock sorry if the usage of the word is not correct. Aftermath is unbelievably bad and I cannot still believe what happened in Tohoku area.
I am seriously worried people in Tokyo might be evacuated in near future. I'm fearing what we can't see.
Sorry I'm bit confused tonight but at least I'm OK so far.

I haven't heard any of the talking heads say anything about this idea. Makes sense to me, Kelly!
I simply cannot imagine Tokyo being evacuated. Where would all the people go?

I hope your daughter gets to go, Kelly (and that the situation is stable enough that her going is not too nerve wracking for you!) Those overseas experiences can be really influential.
