It would be a pity to ruin a gem like Walk It Back (of course I mean THE SONG) with this embarassing crap.

You're right. This song is so beautiful that don't deserve this crap. Well, at least none of the songs deserve this...

In the real life version (or at least in my real life version) the horse is in Berlin and it's shitting, not peeing*.  The horse could be a real horse, a man dressed up as a horse, or a man hung like a horse. Sex is involved.  I've never been to Berlin - but my understanding is that any of those three scenarios is quite plausible.  Anyone here ever been to Berlin?

*glad the director went with peeing.

What is the Horse Fair?

The Horse Fair (Fickstutenmarkt) is a private event that takes place irregularly in clubs in Berlin, Hamburg, Leipzig and
Mannheim. Here, willing mares offer themselves to stallions without ever seeing their faces.

Like all horse fairs, this one has strict rules.

Before the event begins, every participant has to decide whether he wants to take part either as a mare or as a stallion.
It is not possible to change roles once the market begins!

On the day of the fair, the mares arrive before the stallions. The naked mares have their hands bound and are blindfolded.

Then the stallions appear and can fully inspect the shackled mares at their leisure.

When a stallion has decided on a mare, he leads the mare untied to a covering place of his choice.

When the stallion has finished covering the mare, this mare is then available for covering by other stallions.

The Stablemaster

So where does this leave the girl in the carpark in the video? I'm sorry, I couldn't resist. This is the funniest thread I think I've ever seen on this site, it just cracks me up. Maybe they are just literally taking the piss, I don't know.

If the goal is to provoke a reaction then "Walk It Back" may their finest video to date. I love that they would put this out. Good to see R.E.M. take themselves way less seriously again. Sure the video is ridiculous, but really.... so what?

What a beautiful song and what an inappropriate and pointless video.

Makes the song seem like some sort of joke. Is that what Michael thinks of this song, as a sarcastic joke?

Shame, since this song was one of the most soulful, honest performances R.E.M. have given in ages. Maybe Michael was embarrassed by that, and requested that the video try to 'lighten' it up? Who knows.

At least we don't have to pay for these 'films'!

'It Happened Today' worked well with the music for me.

Somehow though, I still prefer this utter failure of an art piece to a slick 'MTV' 'alternative' video to sell mp3s!

I'd sooner chew my leg off than watch this video again.

Hopefully the next video will make it all ok.

This film Project was Michael's idea no doubt.  Peter and Mike have said before they trust Michael and leave the videos up to him.  Peter's starting his tour with his other band and Mike's gearing up for the Big Star. They probably are not too focused on these videos.

OK, I got around to watching it and honestly, it's bad but I don't find it any worse than that AAAA one with the furry suits.   The river of pee was kind of cool, flowing down the concrete.  It makes no sense whatsoever but it is billed as "the French artist's visual response to the song" so it does make me wonder just what she though of the song to respond in such a way.

I can forget the video and continue to love this song.  It really works for me.

Yeah, I'm not sure why the "AAAA" video is being better received. Is it simply because Stipe and Peaches are in it? With the use of costumes it seems largely aimed at the hipster crowd. At least the one I see around here that is usually adorned with the animal themed knit caps.
"We were listening to the UNC radio (station) there and they were playing an R.E.M. song. I like R.E.M. fine, but at the end of it, the DJ says, 'Ya that was R.E.M., the sound of the new South'. I looked at my roommate and we said, Gawd, if that's the sound of the new South, I preferred it when it was on the skids. That's how we got the name."

OK I hafta say, this album has really grown on me huge and the *only* song I don't like is "Walk It Back" I love the verses, but the chorus of repeating "walk it back, walk it back, walk it back" feels a bit lazy to me

So this video is fitting to me...the song seems lazy to me and the video is even more lazy

However, I feel that way about some of the stuff you could find on Succumbs or This Film Is On so take it as you will

this IS pretty bad :(  I like watching the dancing girl, but the rest is just awful and none of it seems to have anything to do with the song.  I like a few of the new videos, I swear.  Like Alligator.  I think people like the Alligator video because it's very fun, and so is the song.  And there is more than that, there is the bit where they are holding microphones when they should be singing, etc.  I dunno I can't explain exactly why the Walk it Back video is so awful because I don't like looking at horse piss, but there can be some "ugly" art that is moving and makes a point.  And REM has had some great videos that weren't literally connected with the song at all.  But for some reason this one is just all too much, like not only do I not like looking at it, but I don't even get the point?  Maybe it's because I think she is trying to show that the horse piss and fly are "beautiful," she actually isn't trying to make an "ugly" video, but unfortunately the fly and horse piss just don't quite make it to "beautiful."

hm... maybe the french lady wanted to make a statement here, how uninteresting and unimportant we all are and how senseless and directionless our all lifes and the lifes of all animals or the whole universe as is are. Don't know, for me it's not a good visualisation of my current favorite song on the album, but it seems that she had these kind of pictures in mind when she heard the song. She probably doesn't like the song?

Whatsoever, I always had some certain understanding/identification problems with french films.

I would have absolutely loved to see what the director of the ÜBerlin video would have made out of this song... :)
