Reading the posts here and from a brazilian friend who said: Do not watch this video, I guess this is the first rem video I won´t watch.
PS: After reading the comments about AAAA, I saw and I like it.

My opinion: it is not the best video ever shot or a great video but it carries some grace.
I mean, look at the girl dancing. she is beautiful, elegant in her moviments, she is happy and so is the guy shooting her. they are happy in a carpark. when you're happy every place is good to dance.
out of this, everything is shit, piss, dull, or worse...boredom.
and when you look back at her dancing again ... well, she is so beautiful and happy..
i am not trying to excuse REM to not have made a greater effort in making this video but it carries something.

The histrionics here are astounding. Again it's like you just discovered that REM does some fucked up shit sometimes and well, are not afraid to piss you off in the process.
Tell you what: go to hqtv and watch every video from wolves lower on up. Some crap, some awesome. Art happens in the margins and from willingness to not care.

This video is so bad, it's really beyond saying...
You know, if this is art, I just don't like it.
They had so many really beautiful videos, Find The River, E-Bow The Letter, Man on the Moon, Drive, Losing My Religion...why in all the world make such a bad video?
Because it's art? Because it's controversial? Because it pisses many people off?
It's a beautiful song, why not make a beautiful and classy video?
This is beyond me, I don't get it, the philistine I am.

Is this REALLY the video for "Walk it Back" or is someone (not just the horse) taking the piss?!

If the "project" is to destroy the reputation of the REM video, well, the objective has been achieved with this video. It has no excuse. Or April 1st is near. I have no other explanation.

if you only knew the back story.

Oh, of course. The oh-so-predictable back story of which only you know the truth. Spookily enough, I think I can figure this one out. The girl dancing in the parking lot represents your hopes and dreams, during one of your hallucinations that you and Michael Stipe are an item. Reality hits, in the form of a fly contaminating a French cafe menu and your delusions. The horse piss is symbolic floods of your hot, bitter tears which ensue when nobody believes your bullshit stories of having inside knowledge of Michael Stipe, combined with his PA's refusal to take your phone calls. The tears, disguised as horse piss flow sadly and foamily down the gutter. The horse's dick is a coded reference to Mike Mills wedding tackle and the last part of the dance is about me, because I dance really, really well.

you'd still hate the video

Yep. Because it sucks. It is suckage of the highest degree. Or lowest, depending on how you judge such things.

Now I know why Michael Stipe wouldn't like to call these videos "promotional videos" and calls them "films". The word promotional includes that they are supposed to be promotion for the music, this video most definitely is no promotion, rather anti-promotion. Film just says that it has been filmed, which is the truth here.
And whilst I don't mind horses peeing and I don't find this gross, the reasoning behind showing a peeing horse in a music "film" is somewhat beyond me.
The video looks very amateurish.

The video made me laugh. It's terrible, but I just think it's funny. Maybe in an Andy Kaufman kinda way.
I wonder if JMS showed this to Peter and Mike. Must have been an awkward situation.

I actually like most of the videos thus far but this is pretty lame and embarrassing. Saying it's art gives art a bad name (so anything terrible is ok because it's art?) What next, a video of Ethan taking a poop to "Every day is yours to win"?
Perhaps the video is a metaphor for how the world perceived REMs career. The graceful dancer is their early years, the fly is their arty middle years and the piss flowing out of the horse's genitals is Around the Sun. It all ends with the dancer again (Accelerate and Collapse into Now).
Disclaimer: I like Around the Sun

I love this song, so now I'm not at all sure I want to watch the "film". Danggit.

Well, as a zoologist, I really like this video. Except for the bit with the horse's cock, cos that makes me feel inadequate...

Yes, but it "walks it back" right back up to where you can't see it anymore. I hope I don't have night mares tonight.

I think you've just inadvertently stumbled across the meaning of this video, and perhaps even the song. I've always detected a hint of animal cock buried in the metaphors of Michael Stipe's lyrics...

oh... not even close.
here's the back story i've come up with for this film
(the film being directly related to the song)
two people are having a conversation. with their permission (because they don't want him to feel left out), a third person is allowed to listen in. the things that are said are never easy for the third person to hear. but it is what it is.

Who's having the convo? Dancing girl is all wrapped up in throwing shapes, she's not conversing with anybody.
That would make the fly and the horse the protagonists. Or is it the horse's dong and the fly? The fly and the piss? Wow, your back story scenario is pretty fucked up.
And at the end dancing girl looks as if she is not bothered a single jot about hearing this distressing talk. She continues to cavort and smile.
Have you watched the, er art piece? Did you say this is the narrative you'd put to the footage? Were you wearing a hat made of tin foil while trying to figure it out?

1) The Alligator video for the beautiful crazy Michael's outfits
2) The Walk It Back one because it's THE WORST JOKE EVER!!!
Since the only 2 good videos are the Alligatos and the Honey ones, I hope that the choice for next single is based only by the video's quality. It would be a pity to ruin a gem like Walk It Back (of course I mean THE SONG) with this embarassing crap. What will be next step? Will the horse shit so that the fly can go to its dirty favourite place?

OK, as I proceed reading this thread, I really get a few great laughs...especially about the horse "walking back" its cock, which is a really hilarious notion. And Sweet Fanny Adams' last commment was also really worth the read.
Other than that, from now on whenever I listen to this song, I'll always picture that damn horse pissing - great.
I wish, I hadn't watched it.
I dunno...this film project hasn't spawned a lot of good stuff.
P.S. What back story is there to know, anyways.
Even the best back story wouldn't turn that stuff into gold.
