It's the poison that it measures
Brings illuminating vision
It's the knowing with a wink
That we expect in Southern women
It's the wolf that knows which root to dig to save itself
It's the octopus that crawled back to the sea.

How commercial can you get. Why does Kayne have so many celebrity followers when he is clearly an asshole. Do you mean Beyonce? The only one I could understand him being drawn to is Lady Ga-Ga. She's like a young female Elton John.

That's what I thought!! Same story for Peaches.

Michael has often said that he likes bubble gum pop.
That someone just pulled me up and out of cartoon quicksand.

There was a pretty good interview with Michael today on Radio 2 with Dermot O Leary at 4.15pm. Nothing new, but it was clear Dermot was a fan of both Michael and the band & made it so much more enjoyable than the above interview.
Interesting that Michael recognises every review he has read in the last 15 years has compared the current record to their back catalogue. Sense of frustration, for sure.

He has increasingly terrible taste in music...and I think that explains some things lately.
While it's fun to just groove along to catchy pop shit once in a while, I certainly hope his inspirations lie elsewhere. Otherwise we're all in trouble. I've been there for a while already.

Thanks for providing the link! This was nice. Michael looks so much better and younger without beard.
I think the reason why not so many bands cover R.E.M. songs is because it is very hard to provide a better version than the one delivered by R.E.M. itself. Most covers seem less good than the original. It may have to do with Michael's voice.

Better answer to the question, "when did you realise your voice was unique"
"about 4 seconds into that cover band you made me sit through the last time I was on this gawd-awful show".

how dare michael admit to liking a commercially successful artist?!! the musical snobbery here is breathtaking sometimes...
commercially successful artist does not (necessarily) equal crap music (and vice versa). just to stir these pure waters further, i think adele is a very talented artist, and michael once chose 99 problems as amongst his favourite music videos.

Got to disagree with you about Adele. She's just another one of the 'Brit School' south London factory-farmed batch. Just look at the so-called 'Brit Awards' every year, same crowd and is it any wonder! Her current cover of that Dylan song is brutal. But you can just see the production wheel behind her salivating at the fact that she's hit 7 weeks at number 1, bigger slice of the profits for them. Very average singer (but hey each to their own).

I remember him referencing Basia once in an interview which wasn't all that odd except I think it's the same one in which he'd just referred to Mariah Carey as "Pariah". No matter how indie or obscure, all artists are usually paying attention to each other in one form or another. Ryan Adams has been known to mention the Backstreet Boys (and even covered them) and Christina Aguilera in concert before which are about as far removed from his kind of music as one could possibly imagine.
"We were listening to the UNC radio (station) there and they were playing an R.E.M. song. I like R.E.M. fine, but at the end of it, the DJ says, 'Ya that was R.E.M., the sound of the new South'. I looked at my roommate and we said, Gawd, if that's the sound of the new South, I preferred it when it was on the skids. That's how we got the name."

Bono once called a big chunk of 1980s UK pop music "wallpaper music" [1983] and that he wished his band could wash it all away.. ie. many songs my, erm.. generation now refer to as iconic and of course he has since worked with a few acts esp recently.. who make that era seem like the flipping Beatles, Bowie and Stones in comparison...
To be honest, I think we're in an era of be nice, don't rock the boat, whereas the 1970s and 1980s was at times a royal "fuck you!! no fuck you!" opinionated free for all, and at time bloody fun if you were a fan... just now it's a bit beige and opinionless... unless you are some 20yo chippy act using Twitter too often to fight yer meaningless catty battles... eh, Rihanna, Katy Perry?

Everyone remembser Stipe aka. R.E.M Uk? They've taken their tribute act to the ulitmate and split up. One after the other member posted on FB that they were quitting. Reading between the lines, so to speak, there's been a bit of a falling out and obviously these amatueres haven't quite managed to cover this up as well as the oriiginals.
