The Baseball Project Volume 2: High and Inside

by Jeff Strowe

Figuring out a way to combine baseball and rock and roll while getting paid for it has surely been a dream of countless Americans over the years. After all, there are few things that evoke more passion and debate than these two. Unlimited arguments have taken place throughout the years over the validity of certain teams, players, bands, and moments. Should Pete Rose be in the Hall of Fame? Who’s the better manager, Torre or Cox? Page or Hendrix? Beatles or Stones?...the list goes on and on. Baseball and rock music make for great debate, so why not combine the two?

"We were listening to the UNC radio (station) there and they were playing an R.E.M. song. I like R.E.M. fine, but at the end of it, the DJ says, 'Ya that was R.E.M., the sound of the new South'. I looked at my roommate and we said, Gawd, if that's the sound of the new South, I preferred it when it was on the skids. That's how we got the name."

I'm trying but I'm finding hard to get into this music -because of those baseball lyrics. I have never followed the sport nor I remember having watched a game from beginning to end. I may have to abandon the enterprise.

Other bands I'm exploring are Fleet Foxes and Junip.

Even though I don't follow baseball very closely, I enjoy the lyrics because they mention many old-time players from my childhood and youth.  That makes it fun.

I'm not a fan of baseball but the lyrics don't bother me. Still need to pick up the new one.

The Baseball Project are to release an LP single in time to coincide with Record Store Day 2012. It's called "El Hombre" with "Harvey Haddix" as B-Side.

Quote

Coming in time for Record Store Day 2012 is the first Euclid Sessions single recorded at Euclid Records NOLA. The Baseball Project, made up of Steve Wynn, Scott McCaughey, Peter Buck and Linda Pitmon, perform “El Hombre” a rockin’ little number that should become a major hit in Los Angeles this summer. Sorry St. Louis, but we’ll try and get TBBP to write a number about Carlos Betran. The B-Side is “Harvey Haddix”.
