Leaving New York is a good song. I wouldn't go as far as great but if not for "leaving was never my proud" it would rank  close to the top on ATS.
Amazing what 5 little words can do to fuck up a song. It drives me nuts  and it's repeated enough times to get on my last nerve. I've tried to get past it. I can't. *shrug*

'make my make-believe believe in MEEEEEEE'
'Phoney-baloney'
'Wrestle you for a spoon inside your sleeping bag'
'TOOOOOOOO PLAAAAAAAAYYYYYY'- Wrong Child

4 songs that michael has almost ruined for me due to one shit line or another. Although Falls To Climb would still be rubbish even if they had emitted it. :)

How about "The Greatest Thing since bread came sliced!"
Just kidding...we've had that conversation before. ;)

I can forgive mediocre lyrics if the song that houses them is good. I don't mind goofy lyrics, in fact, I love the lyrics, "I'll be pounce pony, boney maroney, pony before the cart." It sounds so ridiculous but I always sing along with the uttermost feeling. It's the maudlin songs that I can't take. I don't mind love songs, or a little verbal vomitage, but keep it fresh. I don't want to hear an up-with-people chant, and sometimes I think that's what I'm getting.

As far as "Leaving was never my proud," though I don't like the song "Leaving New York," I think that line is a nice example of Stipe playing walker-between the worlds with his verbs and nouns. He can get away with it somehow. This is the guy who mispronounced "Cuyahoga," made up a word called "Speed-Metter" in "Find the River," and claims the media describes him as "esoteric" when he clearly means "eccentric." He's like Dr. Suess with a speech impediment.

(And I'm not up for solving the riddle of the sphinx up there).

"What would you have me say instead
of what I said? Where would I go? How
could I follow that except to do what I
did – which is to walk it back."

are you people serious? - you try write something like that

around here, if an rem song doesn't contain the word "hope" or some shit, people tear it to shreds
"There are problems in these times
But whoo! None of them are mine"

-The Velvet Underground.

Yeah, that's what I meant! ;)

As far as the Walk it Back lyrics, I'm sorry. I don't think they're very good. It's just my opinion. Personally I think anybody can write a play by play of their feelings.

Interesting, because 2 of those songs I can't listen to. The Wrong Child is painful, not so much for the words, but that falsetto voice. It makes my teeth curl. Never play it. If it comes on, I frantically grope for the skip button.
And yeah "wrestle you for a spoon..." is pretty bad but there's so much on that album that equally sucks. In fact that particular song has much worse.

"I'll bring you a big bouquet
I picked it myself today
it compliments your eyes
There's love at the end of the line"

I mean, come ON. What was he THINKING? *CRINGECRINGECRINGE*
Fucking Bono.

The audio on those 2 new songs  isn't working for me. It's not my speakers. Has the sound been disabled?
I can see the video content OK, but it's completely mute.

Heyho,

I have a plan, a cunning plan - I'm not going to read the lyrics.  Instead I will just make them up to be what I think he says or what I want to hear.  This technique served me remarkably well until "UP" so I'll just have to hope for erratic enunciation, and all will be well.

Christ people.

Walk it Back is a stunning song. Lyrically it works exactly right with the music. The line "Time I can not abide" has so much emotional weight behind it.

This hyper desconstructionism thing going on here is kind of annoying.

When the lyrics are published to the web without the music..is it right to blame the fans for the deconstruction?

Actually, both are good points - I certainly remember the time when the lyrics were unbeknown to us until well after launch (and most of the time revealed through people's guesses).

Either way, we need to listen to the song. There were much 'simpler' lyrics in the past that were so good in the context of the song (Everybody Hurts?), and other more 'elaborate' lyrics that perhaps didn't work in the overall scheme (some very good lyrics on Reveal, of which I am personally no big fan, for example).

In saying that I'm no fan of Reveal, Beat a Drum remains one of my favourite songs  ;)

no.  there is no sound.
there will be on the next one though.

What, you're turning this into some kind of tease? Don't bore me, indeed.

What the fuck are you gibbering on about? You wuv Stipe and to prove it you're quoting some of his lyrics and you've set up some thing where you're playing games with video content off the new album, saying you'll let us hear the music when you decide. In the meantime we can look at the pretty pictures??
I don't want to play double dog dare. I'm not 10 years old.
Piss off.

I know some of you like fables and parables and things of that kind. Michael Stipe likes them too.
So there's one about this little girl.
She has a new My Little Pony, and her uncle works for Mattel or some shit so she gets the latest  one before it hits the shops and brings her new M.L. Pony to the playground. And  so much fuss has been made over this Pony, in ads and so forth about how it shits rainbows, that people want to see the new M.L. Pony. But the little girl, let's call her Priss, says
"Oh but when I brought my other ponies in you didn't squeal loudly enough and one of you said purple pony had a manky mane. So I'll let you see the new Pony's tail, but that's it unless you say that this My Little Pony (heavy emphasis on the MY) has the best ass in the universe. Otherwise I am taking this pony  away and you can't see it or touch it or anything Nyah, nyah nyah, because some of you are meany buttholes about my toys. NEENER NEENER! It's  in my bag and you can't see it unless you butter me up real good and say how fabulous it is just from its back end. I double dares yas!"

and the moral of this story is, little girls and boys:

"you had me pegged from the start.
I'll be pounce pony,
phony maroney,
pony before the cart.
I'll be pounce pony.
this ceremony
only fills my heart."
