I'm sorry to hear this. I lost a very beloved cat this month to kidney failure and it was incredibly heartwrentching to watch my buddy die and hold his paw in my hand as his heart stopped beating, and I know that dogs are generally more personable than cats, so it must've been very difficult on you to lose such a companion.
I think that "Oh My Heart" will always remind me of him in the way that "Walk It Back" will probably always remind you of your dog.
My condolences, it's difficult to lose a pet for sure.

The one line that really bugs me in the song is: "How could I follow that except to do what I did, which is to walk it back." Someone might have mentioned this already, but the two underlined words really bug me. The second one should be "was" or the first should be "do"... or am I completely missing something here? It just sounds really bad to me when he switches verb tenses like that.
"My kingdom for a horse... to water!"

While I basically like the song, I really think the lyrics are sub-par again, a process that started during Reveal and has reached the downward-spiral since.
I don't mind him switching the tenses, though.
My problem is rather the unimaginative "chorus".
On the other hand, it must be really hard to write good lyrics, so maybe I shouldn't complain too much.

when you love a pet, it's not important if he's a cat or a dog.
to be honest, if I should relate Walk it back to a personal situation, it would be something "love" related.
but that line, that line about time, well ... it breaks my heart into pieces if I think to my little friend...

I think I'm totally out of sync with REM fans these days, because I struggle to listen to this song and not cringe at how bad it is. It sounds like the boring old man sequel to Rockville.
That's interesting, because Rockville is one of a handful of songs we know Mike wrote the lyrics for, and I'm 99% sure JMS wrote the lyric for WIB.
Hmmmm.

yeah, but maybe he had Mills in mind when he wrote it.
What do I know, it's just how I reacted to the song. It could just as easily be about a woman and I have it all wrong. It just has the kind of sentimentalism that I've heard from men...in fact my brother is going through some stuff at the moment, and this song could easily be his sound track. I've been contemplating sending it to him, because I think he might find it a comfort, but I'm not sure.

Horrible song...still. At least it's age appropriate though, there is nothing more despicable than songwriters who don't write for their age.

Ah, Waggie! Again, you make me smile.
However, I love the song. Maybe because I'm the appropriate age for it.
