I'm just glad to hear Gillian's voice again. Hopefully we'll see another album from her someday.
"We were listening to the UNC radio (station) there and they were playing an R.E.M. song. I like R.E.M. fine, but at the end of it, the DJ says, 'Ya that was R.E.M., the sound of the new South'. I looked at my roommate and we said, Gawd, if that's the sound of the new South, I preferred it when it was on the skids. That's how we got the name."

I went along to their show here in London last week at Hammersmith Apollo - it was seriously good stuff. They played pretty much everything off the new album except for Dear Avery and January Song. That was kind of good for me as I didn't really know their back catalogue and had come for the new material, but no lapses of attention there either. I didn't expect the degree to which they kind of get into drama effect on stage. For instance there was a song called Mariners Revenge and they had all these crazy moves, falling down etc etc, it shouldn't have worked but it utterly did.
If there ever in your neck of the woods, check them out.

Clip from their appearance on Austin City Limits this weekend (that also includes Gillian Welch):
**Edited to add: does anyone know how to post a YouTube clip since the recent upgrade? Sometimes I'm able to post them successfully and other times not. If I wrap the URl in the "" tags it comes out like this:
or like this (I did not add the "URL" tags):

just post the original link, not with the embedded tag or anything else in it
also the youtu.be and other shorten links don't work

A New song off the forthcoming album premiered on stereogum today.
It's the poison that it measures
Brings illuminating vision
It's the knowing with a wink
That we expect in Southern women
It's the wolf that knows which root to dig to save itself
It's the octopus that crawled back to the sea.
