Someone may have already posted on this but just heard some of their new stuff (album, 'The King is Dead' out Jan 18th) and it's got REM written all over it. Really, really good stuff. I suppose it helps when you have P. Buck on some of the songs ; ]

Yeah, I read that Colin Meloy figured if he was going to write R.E.M. riffs, he may as well get Peter Buck to play them.
"Calamity Song" sounds like a Reckoning outtake, which isn't surprising considering Meloy had the 2009 reissue (which is superb, by the way) on repeat for most of that year, as did I.

Meloy was on NPR earlier this evening and mentioned that "Calamity Song" is an homage to early 80s era R.E.M. KEXP has been playing the hell out of it, usually following up "Calamity Song" with vintage R.E.M. such as "Talk About the Passion" and one night, even something from Chronic Town. You can listen to the interview here. I'll definitely be picking this up on Tuesday along with the new Pearl Jam.
"We were listening to the UNC radio (station) there and they were playing an R.E.M. song. I like R.E.M. fine, but at the end of it, the DJ says, 'Ya that was R.E.M., the sound of the new South'. I looked at my roommate and we said, Gawd, if that's the sound of the new South, I preferred it when it was on the skids. That's how we got the name."

I got to hear the whole album last week at the radio station and it sounds pretty good!

I keep hearing the refrain of 'Fire' from The One I Love' in the chorus of 'Down by the River'. The chords sound almost exactly the same. I do like bands that learn from the masters

I read some reviews and a lot of them consider 'Down by the water' as a re-write of 'The one I love'. Great song though.

Great album, Down By The Water reminds me more of World Leader Pretend than The One I Love.

I really like this album, and I don't understand all the mediocre-to-poor reviews it's been getting.
I mean, everyone pretty much agreed that The Hazards of Love was a bit...too much. So they turn around and get back to their roots. And now a lot of people seem to be saying it's too boring or short or whatever.

The Decemberists have a load of UK gigs the same week Michael's in London for his Q&A session. I wonder, I wonder, possible link up with them at one of the shows? Even though it was Peter on their album, REM have taken them to heart. I noticed in London Metro newsrag last week under a fluffy section titled 'What's on your Ipod' Mike featured and he made a big thing out of 'Down by the Water' and that it was on regular play for him.

I thought The Hazards of Love was a much better album.
Peter Buck did show how the band would be much better with someone other than Chris Funk on guitar.

They just announced a date here with Best Coast in June, can't wait for my first live Decemberists experience.

Never been a fan of the pirates, but I like this. Fairly sublime. Which, put another way means it sounds good, but is also kind of boring. Pirates can't win with me.
