I'm not judging the album by its titles. They are the strangest yet, they may be excellent songs but I'm not so keen on "Every Day is yours to Win", "Oh My Heart" and "That Someone is You".
Cheesy titles for me are worse than funny ones. But whoever is judging is silly really as there are lots of cheesy song titles in the R.E.M. catalogue.
I'm glad the album isn't a song name though, I've no problem with it being a lyric.

My friend Adrian bought the latest issue of Q Magazine, and here's what it says:
'All the best' is a 'balls to the wall rocker' and sounds like a single, 'Alligator...' is a rocker, The Eddie Vedder song was described as 'driving', ''Oh my heart' is a follow on from 'Houstan' but with a New Orleans vibe and 'walk it back' was written after a late night out back in the hotel using the in-suite piano. Buck says it's the best collection of 12 songs they've done....
'Blue' is brooding, ends with the album title line. Patti came up with the album title reading the album lyric sheet. Mills says it's as good as anything we've ever done and has the energy of Accelerate, more diverse like Automatic. Buck said they haven't been as excited about an album in 20 years... Stipe is in 'non interview mode' at the moment. 'Discoverer' is very Green.
'Walk it back' was written in the hotel suite on piano, recorded the next day in one take, they listened back a week later and decided it sounded 'fucked up in a whole lotta ways, we couldn't better it!'
Thanks Adrian!
I'll get the mag later today and scan the entire feature.

I just read it. Buck said he hasn't been this excited in 20 years. They say that every record just like I say "I'm never drinking again" when I have a bad hangover.

Mills says that every time, but Buck doesn't. If my memory serves me right, the last time he claimed that the new record was their best ever, it was with New Adventures in Hi-Fi.

No, no, no! It's always Peter. I remember even he said on a CDUK interview that Around The Sun was their best record around 2004. I admit, it's still great to hear they are so enthusiastic about this one! Really excited now.

We should ask Mr Buck what he thinks about ATS now.
Anyway yeah, this is exciting! I'm curious about Stipe's renewed non-interviews policy though. These past few months, he was really eager to talk about art shows he'd attended, etc., he even contributed to Gwynneth Palthrow's blog, but now he's in no mood to talk about the record... Good ol' Stipe.

I think every member of R.E.M. has at one time uttered that their newest record was their "best yet", it comes with the territory with every artist, not just R.E.M.
In regards to Stipe not granting interviews, in the wake of the release of Around the Sun he said he would remain mum on the sound of future album releases because of the backlash of some of the statements that surfaced regarding the sound of that record.

"We were listening to the UNC radio (station) there and they were playing an R.E.M. song. I like R.E.M. fine, but at the end of it, the DJ says, 'Ya that was R.E.M., the sound of the new South'. I looked at my roommate and we said, Gawd, if that's the sound of the new South, I preferred it when it was on the skids. That's how we got the name."

I fail to see how that would make any difference whatsoever. To me, it's not about song titles, album titles or the name of a song also being the name of a record, it's about the music. Perhaps I'm alone in this...

And another flurry of futile discussion kicks up! I have a feeling some of these are going to sound NOTHING like we think...and that's the fun of it.
I love "Discoverer," how R.E.M. have not had a song with that title yet is beyond me. Also a fan of "Marlon Brando" and "Alligator" which, with peaches involved, is the one I'm most curious about. "Mine Smell Like Honey" is a bit creepy at first, but still mysterious and Stipean. What a nice holiday treat!

You're missing the point. If it's only the music then you're telling me you wouldn't be least bit a little disappointed if each album artwork was boring White every time and songs were called Song 1, Song 2 etc.
Ok, maybe that's a bit silly, but somes the small things can matter!

I don't think there is any point reading anything into what any of the band say. It is impossible not to be positive about your latest work. I do feel this will be a return to form though! I really don't like Accelerate, but if it was a transional album to get back to greatness then fair enough!

Those titles are... interesting! Alligator Aviator Autopilot Antimatter reminds me of ITEOTWAWKI, but it does theme to be airplane themed... maybe. Peter said something about 15 songs right? I wonder if those other 3 have titles
It's all here where I keep it, it's all in the yellow submarine, yellow submarine, yellow submarine...

"Mine Smell Like Honey" is indeed a hilarious title. I shall now officially begin hoping for a brilliant album and a secret show at the Tractor Tavern.
