Hi there, I've been following this topic and others for a while without really saying anything and I thought I would put in my two pence worth...

I think the title's great, and I'm glad to finally here some concrete info about the album. At the end of the day though, it's only a title, I don't think anyone's going to decide whether the album is great or terrible purely on the back of a name. I do think however that from what Ethan has said (I think he confirmed Bertis' sentiments that it is a great REM album) and from his blog, maybe we can hope for something special. I also wonder if the quiet from the REM camp (wouldn't we normally have a few song titles from studio sessions by now?) on the matter is merely a reaction to the excess of knowledge on accelerate before it came out or if also they are feeling rather pleased with themselves but don't want to let the cat out of the bag.

Also, I haven't read the Q interview with Peter but personally I don't think the 3 take thing is bad news. It sounded like he loved the way they worked on the Tired Pony album and he brought that experience to REM. Don't forget REM is a democracy, they would have agreed to do it that way together. As for the 18 minutes a side comment, I think it has to be remembered that Peter has a fairly dry sense of humour and a tendency to exagerate things greatly. Isn't that just his way of saying he doesn't want the album to be too long?

One more thing: I also hope that its not named after a song on the album, I really think it shows a lack of imagination and takes away from the intrigue. I also dislike their habit of printing the lyrics, which they've done since Bill left, I used to spend hours poring over the artwork and photos whereas nowadays I just take a quick look at the booklet and I'm done, am I the only one?

Glad to have got that off my chest, sorry it was a bit long (it turned out to be about a pound's worth), I need to write here more often! ;)

I don't really have any issue with the "only three takes" process. Peter also said the same sentiment after Reckoning was released about not liking to over labor during the songwriting process. He also referred to it again after Reveal was released. It's really nothing new for him to feel that way. It does strike me as odd that Michael and Mike like to revisit songs over and over again. I would hate that. So I'm in Peter's ballpark, definately.  B)

And naming a record after a song does lack imagination. Badly.

With all due respect, R.E.M. has never released an album that Bertis Downs didn't immediately say was their best album yet, and the same basically applies to our webmaster, who once criticized R.E.M. but immediately woke up in a cold sweat and realized -- thank God -- it was all a dream. So none of these quotes or blog posts mean anything (although I enjoyed reading Ethan's take on being a fan and making it a pat of his life's work -- good stuff dude), so just sit back, relax and listen to the dozens and dozens of awesome new albums out this year from other bands.

Collapse Into Now is neither the worst title in the history of recorded sound nor the best -- it falls somewhere in the middle. Exactly where depends on the music. Until we hear that, it's just spin.

It goes without saying that I am far from objective. And I can't really do a track by track or say a word about the record until it is appropriate.

So what I say is what it is :)

Read what you want into it.

My point was we shouldn't read anything into it at all. It's just pregame chatter from inside the home team's clubhouse. Although if you didn't like it, I'd be pretty intrigued -- sort of like Andy Pettitte saying he had no shot against Cliff Lee on Monday night. Now that would be a story.  ;)

Ethan, can you at least tell us if we're gonna get some kind of "surprise" (a la ninetynights,
which I really enjoyed) from now on, up to the release date ?

I´m not sure if I like this title or if I don´t. Well it´s better than Around the Sun or Accelerate. Not as good as Fables of the Reconstruction or Automatic for the People.

Funny how the two weakest albums (in my view) also have the least interesting names (ATS and Accelerate)

Not sure why, but the first thing the new title made me think of is the story of the Chilean miners

I'm wondering if the new song played on 18 july 2008 at the soundcheck for the Locarno show will be on the album.
I like the tune a lot

Instrumental. And it does feel old school, to my ears. In a good way.
Is there someone who was at the show ?

There's only an audio recording. More than one, in fact (they played the song a few times during soundchecks).
During the Prague 2008 show soundcheck, they played 2 new instrumental tracks (one of them being the Locarno one).

I love the title and it really peaks my interest to hear the songs. I am a little surprised that the title is unveiled so early... the power of the internet and leaking... can anything be kept a secret anymore? Anyway, I am really happy with the title, it's a good one.  :)
