I always hoped Buck would get his wish one day and they'd finally name an album Love and Squalor.

As for the name of the album also being the name of a song, it really doesn't matter to me and I'm not sure why it's something people tend to get so bent out of shape about. Yeah, it's cool that it's something R.E.M. never did until Around the Sun but I guess it was part of their "breaking their own rules" thing.

So you'd like the album to be named after a song ?

I'm saying it really doesn't matter to me.
"We were listening to the UNC radio (station) there and they were playing an R.E.M. song. I like R.E.M. fine, but at the end of it, the DJ says, 'Ya that was R.E.M., the sound of the new South'. I looked at my roommate and we said, Gawd, if that's the sound of the new South, I preferred it when it was on the skids. That's how we got the name."

It always feels strange discussing rumours on here since the site became semi-offiecial. You sorta get the sense that WB and HQ are reading the board going "haha, looks at those poor bastards guessing and trying to figure stuff out. what do they now..." Anyway, it'll be interesting to see how and when this title is confirmed. At this point we have a reposted twitter from a BBC reporter who met Bertis. Doubt that Bertis would lead her on though, so I guess it's probably correct.

If it's correct - on one hand I don't really care what they call the album - just get the damn thing out! On the other hand...yeah, pretty cool title. Like the word "collapse" and I guess it will look cool in artwork.

/D

It's confirmed. "Collapse Into Now" is the title.
Judge not lest ye be judged, what a beautiful refrain.

An original album title, to me, is sort of an "extra" that we receive. So it's probably not important, I agree,
but it's cool.

By the way, for anyone interested, i made a recap of the recording process, from may 13 2009 to date.

Every album Except for Around the Sun someone in the band has said, "It's our best album yet".  It's just one of those things they like to say.

You know the word Collapse is used a few times on the Tired Pony album.

I hope there is no Title track again.  I liked that all the other albums until Around The Sun were not named after songs.

I love the Title

Every artist says their latest album is their best yet. I also think it's a roundabout way of not speaking specifically to the sound of the record. That seems to be a practice they started following comments the band made about Around the Sun (?) being "howling and atmospheric" leading up to it's release or whatever that controversy was.

I'm confident that this will be their newest album yet.

I like the title.

Must say, I'm surprised this is the way it's revealed. But these are the times.

Naming convention aside, it's more interesting to wonder about the *theme* of this album...

-- Around The Sun was a muted protest album - muted either because it consciously reflected the Great Quiet (America's inability to express dissent) or because the band was unable to get it together in the studio as it would have wanted... you choose (I choose the former)...

-- Accelerate was its apotheosis - the exuberant, not suppressed, realisation of the political outcome which Around The Sun had quietly sought... Accelerate was the voice Around The Sun could not find, and Living Well Is The best Revenge was its perfect emblem.

There's a duality there - a set-up and a conclusion.

So what is this album (Collapse In To Now?) supposed to be *about*? I can't right now put my finger on what themes might have been preoccupying Michael with this one (why should I?).

In that sense (given there has been no material previewed live a la I'm Gonna DJ, and - wisely - no other hints from Bertis), it's the most mysterious R.EM. album in a while, at this point.

Any takers?

Ok, in very quick hindsight, there's a clear reading of "Collapse In To Now" - it's satisfaction with the present.

BUT - there's a duality about that... is "collapsing" good or bad? That uncertainty - classic Stipean R.E.M.

At the time Out of Time was released we were embroiled in the Gulf War (Operation Desert Shield?) and I thought for sure politics would figure into that but they didn't. Love that record but I still find that a bit strange, especially considering how outspoken R.E.M. can be politically.

There are a handful of people in the world who have heard CiN and all of them wish they could talk about it. Soon enough.

Ethan, do you know if the tracklisting has been decided for the album yet?

Is there going to be a sustained build up to the album from now?

What about doing something where by a track name is released each week?

I love the title, by the way.

Great new title. I like it a lot, perfectly meets my own impression of the current zeitgeist  :)

In order to quell the speculation, I would like to make it clear that I am NOT one of those people who have heard CiN.

However, I can confidently say that CiN is/isn't REM's best album and the hype surrounding the record is/isn't completely warranted.

(I reserve the right to edit this post once CiN has been released and a consensus opinion has been formed.)

Not sure why, but the first thing the new title made me think of is the story of the Chilean miners
