Bertis Downs, reporting from Nashville gives some more information about the new REM records. Anton Corbijn has been doing the photo shoot for the new record, and both Patti Smith and Lenny Kaye are contributing to the record. The band is wrapping up recording in Nashville.
No one knows much of what this record sounds like (well, almost no one), but early word is that its more old school than Accelerate and more diverse.

Patti Smith… yes!
As for old school, (I know this is going to sound crazy:) I am hoping that it's going to sound like a combination of Reckoning, Fables, and Pageant!

Interesting, if the song with Patti on it is anywhere near as good as E-bow, I will be happy!
I had thought they were at the mixing stage now, I wonder if they have had inspiration and decided to record another a couple of tracks??

This is gearing up for a cool release. Anton Corbijn and P.Smith on board is a big deal. I would rather there were no news on the album's sound until bang...its released.

Same here!
Sounds very exciting. Over time NAIHF had become my fav REM album, and patti smith's contribution on that album was on on of my fav songs. I don't think 'old school' means it will sound anything like the first four records, REM have never repeated an album sound for the sake of it and won't start doing so now. It may however, strip back electric guitar and bring back a southern, almost country and music twang.

Since R.E.M. participated at Patti Smith's concerts in Berlin and New Orleans while they were recording for the new album, I think she had more than one opportunity to get in their studio
.
I hope in another duet with Patti

That Patti and Anton contribute to this Record is the best news in weeks for me! And that it should be a kind of "old School" of course! ;-)

This is exciting news. Now I'm impatient to know what the song or songs will sound like that Patti is featured on. Lenny Kaye is an awesome guitar player.

Welcome back R.E.M.! I can't believe they are here recording. And Patti Smith, Lenny Kaye, and Anton Corbijn are in this town too. They recorded Document at Cowboy Jack Clement's studio, the Sound Emporium, in 1987. I've always considered Nashville one of their second hometowns away from Athens, so it's about time they came back. Welcome home R.E.M.!

Agreed, time for a surprise again!
