Borrowed from Ivana:

http://trainwriter.b...t-maxwells.html

The writer of this blog says Scott M. Said there'd be no tour to support the new album.

Really? This is a very, very sad day.

It's not their final album, is it?

Very, very sad indeed, if true. Scott tends to be the one leaking (on purpose or not) certain pieces of news from time time, so I guess it may indeed be true. Perhaps not very surprising though, 2008 as the big "return to form" rock tour, and still had pretty disappointing sales in certain places - what should they do for the new album to somehow repair that unless the album first proves to be a major hit? So, not too surprising but still very sad. Have we seen the last R.E.M. tour?

I read this elsewhere, and of course, it's sad. But then R.E.M. have toured so much in the last couple of years.

I guess there will be at least some promo shows?

And, who knows, maybe there will still be a tour.

Not good news. However, they originally were not going to tour for the UP album, but did a tour anyway.

I disagree that that they have toured "alot" in the last decade. Europe, maybe, but definitely not the US, and, of course, very litte Australia and the rest of the world (one tour in S Africa and S. America).

But, who knows? A couple of shows here and there are bound to happen. But, still, not good news at this juncture.:confused:

I wish I was in the 80 again when they realease an album and tour every year...

About the new album, I don´t understand

Peter always said that their best material comes out when they record the album fast... accelerate was in 2 weeks or so... I thought this new album would be as the previous, but they are doing the opposite... well, at least Ken Stringfellow said it was an old school.. let´s see

I can only shake my head when people believe what some guy they probably have never seen in their lives has to say in a blog. People mishear and get things wrong all the time. Why didn't they ask Mike that question instead of Scott? This is one of those things you have to hear for yourself.
If I meet Peter in October after the Tired Pony show, maybe I'll ask him if these rumors are true.
And if they do in fact tour which I really think they will, this blogger deserves a smack. :)

I recall rumors just after Accelerate was finished being recorded and the source or sources claimed there wouldn't be a tour for that album either. So it must of been their clones I saw six times that year.

Last time I checked, Scott was in the band so I would think his words would hold as much validity as Mike's.
I'd like it here if I could leave and see it from a long way away

I am more concerned with the "cross between Accelerate and Reveal" quote than no tour.

This makes no sense to me. Peter is forever going on about what a workaholic he is. He's always playing with someone and the same with Mike and Scott. Why wouldn't they want to tour their main project? And surely Michael will want to dust off the vocal chords after what will be almost 3 years by the time the album comes out?

I'm also concerned about this. But then didn't Ken say it was very old school and nothing like what they did when he was with them? No drum machines etc? And surely Reveal was the most "Kennish" R.E.M. album?! Methinks this source is a little unreliable...

Oh, I hope it's not so. It would be sad if my first R.E.M. concert was my only.

I'm also a bit concerned about the "cross between Accelerate and Reveal" quote. Concerned, but intrigued.

OK everyone just hold on. Don't get wound up until there is some concrete news - like an announcement on the REM site...I know this is a forum and everyone likes to speculate, but there's no point in donning mourning garb until the day of the funeral.

My dears, I do hope the source is unreliable.

I guess only time will tell.

Exactly.

I think they're done after this--I mean, this album fulfills the contract...

Then again, the upside of them not just hammering in the album in like 2 weeks is that they apparently don't despise being around each other in the studio...

The band just really doesn't seem like much of a priority to them. In retrospect, the curtains should have been drawn in 1997.

If the album is good enough, i'm not too concerned about the lack of touring. I'd much prefer a quality album than a world tour in support of a dud.

They will do something anyway, regardless. Probably some fanclub shows/promotional tour etc.

The album, like automatic for the people, may speak for itself :)

I agree with you, stipeeyes: we can't say R.E.M. won't tour, no official news yet; we should be careful with what people say in a blog, always.

They didn't tour behind Out of Time or Automatic for the People either. That's not to say they didn't perform live during that time period as we all know they did. In other words, if this is indeed true it doesn't mean it's the end of R.E.M. As far as the outside projects, that's been going since the beginning of R.E.M. so that's also not a cause for concern. All that said, now's just as good a time as any to draw the curtain. I still enjoy seeing R.E.M. live but the records post-Bill (even Accelerate) have always shown them to be a shadow of their former selves, no matter how much effort goes into them.
"We were listening to the UNC radio (station) there and they were playing an R.E.M. song. I like R.E.M. fine, but at the end of it, the DJ says, “Ya that was R.E.M., the sound of the new South.” I looked at my roommate and we said, “Gawd, if that's the sound of the “new South," I preferred it when it was on the skids.” That's how we got the name.”
- Rick Miller of Southern Culture on the Skids
