Stipe- please don't force the songs. You still have a great voice just let it happen, let the lyrics carry the music.

I agree! His voice is still amazing...

Please forgive me If I have misread, but is Patti Smith/Lenny Kaye contributing to the new album?

Seems they are underway with the mixing.

Have they been working on this long? How come Peter's had time while he's been doing TP?

Today is the first day of release for this magazine (my hubby just bought it). I have no time to make a transcript myself but I can give you a summary when I have finished reading it.

I remember last time German Rolling Stone had a large R.E.M. article by Birgit Fuß, it was on remhq, translated by Birgit Fuß herself (she is a fanclub member, btw).

Thanks.

One does tend to get over excited sometimes - specially when its around the time when they are working on a new record.

Does he reveal any interesting facts about the album such as song titles, etc?

No there keeping this one very quiet. Just said they had 25 working songs which was down to 15-16 by Berlin and that the max he thinks will be on the album is 12 and the album will broader with more acoustic stuff on it. Stuff we have already heard. But nice to see them being talked about again !

I don't know if this is Peter's "Q" interview. Anyway, here it is:

Peter said: "We compromise. I basically said. 'I'm not going to do a song more than three times; if we can't get a magical take in three takes, then let's just walk away from it.'

"It's a good feeling, because you have to do it, as opposed to, 'oh we can always come back to it tomorrow.'"

He added that the group had recorded around 25 songs for the as yet untitled album, which they have subsequently narrowed down to 15 or 16, though Peter said he doesn't want to include more than 12 on the final record.

Explaining why the band chose to record in Berlin, Peter added: "We pick recording places by what city we want to go and hang out in for a while. In the past we've done a few things where we've gone to smaller towns and we almost go crazy.

"I want to wander around, go to bookshops, eat different kinds of food and meet people."
