Honestly if you're someone who doesn't want it spoiled, I think you probably shouldn't be browsing threads on Murmurs called "Christmas Single" or you're kind of asking for it.

you took the words out of my mouth.

....Does anyone want to speculate on what the whole bird motif is all about?

In 07/08, they had an induction graphical theme that showed the polar magnetic fields and an electrical current induction drawing as well, all in honor of the Hall of Fame 'Induction'.

But what does the bird thing mean?  I find parallels to Wilco's 'One Wing' song and poster art theme from this year....

BTW, just thought I'd post this cause I just found out.  Somebody earlier had commented that the new track "Crazy Like a Fox" had been by NRBQ, but I listened to their song on youtube, and it's not the same.

After listening to some similarly named samples on Amazon, I found that the new R.E.M. one is a cover of the song on the Link Cromwell & the Zoo album also titled "Crazy Like a Fox".  It looks like it's material from 1965 and 1966.

It was driving me crazy until I could find out was it was from and just thought I'd post it in case it was driving anybody else crazy.

P.S.  I'm in Columbus, OH and received my fan club package yesterday (12/12/09).  It's my first year in the club although I've been a fan since Monster and am absolutely thrilled with this year's Mills-centric package and was overjoyed with the Berry contribution.

However, can't wait to hear it. For those of you who don't know the first song: it's meant to be sung by A GIRL!!! This will be hilarious, for sure.

I can't help imagining Mike sounding like Madonna on this Santa Baby! :D:D:D

** Spoiler alert **

I thought Mike singing Material Girl was kinda weird, but Girls Just Want To Have Fun was a much better arrangement. Just my opinion, of course.

Isn't this the first studio release with Berry on it released under the R.E.M. name since Hi-Fi?

I seem to remember #9 Dream for the Lennon-cover album "Instant Karma" had Bill Berry on it? I think so anyway haha...

You are correct.  He did perform on #9 Dream also.  Still, it's pretty special that he's on the fan club single this year.

I think it's due to the fact that it contains a song called "MAGNETIC NORTH" ;)

Anyway, I keep speculating on Bill Berry's presence in "Merry Christmas Everybody" (the producer is the one who produced "#9 Dream").

i just received xmas newsletter. No xmas any thing.Any other member same thing?I live in Athens,Georgia and my newsletter is dated 2009 vol4 Hope it is not true. The issue does not deal directly only talks about not raising price.I am one of there favorite fans.Would have rather had a raise in price....I just got on Ebay and there is a package i am just very upset! I live here and only got a newsletter.I am going to find out next week what happened...how could i get a newsletter at all? they usually send the package alone.needless to say i am very upset.I would appreciate if anyone else has the same exp. hope not....

Be patient. We only received our fanclub packages 2 days ago, and just received our newsletters today. I think the order is pretty random, and it's not an either/or type of thing.

Shows that R.E.M. has lost alot of fans in the last decade, with there being less and less hardcore fans, people losing interest it seems.

Are you saying that you think the 'induction' thing in the past christmas package had nothing to do with the Hall of Fame or it's a coincidence?

They're out of the band. Mills is the only surviving member.

"Of course you liked early R.E.M. best," I want to say. "You were 17 years old and drunk on tequila and in love with a girl who didn't know you existed, and 'Harborcoat' summed up your melancholy mood like it was written just for you."

Nope. I'm from Italy, not U.S.A. and I haven't the heart to sell any R.E.M. stuff

Can anbody on here with the 2001 Fan Club Single confirm something for me?

I've heard a live version of Find the River supposedly from that single.  But, I know that the single had an audio track of it live from Athens, GA on 10/16/01 and also featured a multi-media track of them rehearsing it.

If the song I have heard is sort of tinny sounding with a echo/reverb on it and has no audience noise at all, is this the researsal recording, or does the live track sound the same?

I've found you can't win for losing on the spoiler alert front. Someone always seems to get their knickers in a twist no matter what. Personally, I didn't venture into this thread until after I received the fanclub package and gave the single a listen. I like to be surprised too.

I think the package being for sale on eBay (as it has been for several years now) shows a demand for it. It doesn't necessarily mean a fan just wants to get rid of it. I look at it the same way I do record leaks. If your new album isn't leaking, that must mean there's not much interest in it.

On first listen I'm not going for Santa Baby too much but I do like Crazy Like A Fox. Thanks for the legwork on the background on that one.
"We were listening to the UNC radio (station) there and they were playing an R.E.M. song. I like R.E.M. fine, but at the end of it, the DJ says, 'Ya that was R.E.M., the sound of the new South'. I looked at my roommate and we said, Gawd, if that's the sound of the new South, I preferred it when it was on the skids. That's how we got the name."
- Rick Miller of Southern Culture on the Skids
