"Be mine" is one of the best love songs ever written. But R.E.M. played it only three times:
8 June 1997 - Tibetan Freedom Concert, New York, NY
(14 June 1998 - Tibetan Freedom Concert, Washington D.C.)
17 February 2005 - Color Line Arena, Hamburg, Germany
Is there any who owns one this live recordings? I'm looking for this very hard since several years. All I found were two versions of the Thom-Yorke-Version of TFC98 but only in low qualitiy. Maybe somebody could help me... :o
Many thanks in advance.

I'm not sure. But I hope it was Michael singing that song. ;)

OK, I will see if I can put the mp3īs on pando tonight. Loose songs, everyone, no full shows, so should be OK.

OK, here it is: R.E.M. did play it for the two Tibetan Freedom Concerts, but not in Hamburg. That was The Thrill's set. I don't have the audio for that. If anyone does I would be interested.
All in all, there ARE 3 versions;
1) The Tibetan Feedom Concert, June 8th 1997, sung by Michael (very poor quality)
2) The Tibetan Freedom Concert, June 14th 1998, sung by Thom Yorke (also not an excellent recording, these were all open air)
3) A B-side to a single, also known as the Mike on the bus version (presumably because Mike plays the guitar on the tour bus, someone recorded this and Michael added vocals) but it's also Michael singing this one.
It's quite possible that Mike is singing on the Hamburg one, I am sure someone who was there can tell us. I wish I had it, but alas!
As an aside, I really can't hear this song, but that is another chapter altogether...
Of course, I just realised that I can't post the last track, since it was commercially released. So just the other two then:

Enjoy!

Thanks for giving me the two songs. It's a pity that the recording quality is so poor - but hey, it's better than nothing. Thanks again. :)

So there is only one show remaining. It seems that R.E.M. don't like that song much.
I remember Mike saying he loved that song, but I think Michael said the lyrics were gross & icky.

it's sounds like a song of obsession to me, so I always think it's weird when people enjoy it as a love song. Someone listed it as a make out song in your other thread, and I literally shuddered when I read that. I guess I'm a really autonomous person, but if you're the sort of person who likes to feel smothered in a relationship; another persons reason for living, then it could work as a love song...but for me it = eek! and run a mile! It's that part about making someone their religion, or something that freaks me out the most. The way Stipe sings it makes it even creepier..so I think I'm glad to read that he things it's gross and icky too...at least now that I know that was his intent, I can think of it as better writing than I used to.
I think Mike wrote the lyrics as well as the music. And yes, it is an obsession song. I don't like it and never will.

Mike did indeed write the music, but what do you base the lyrics statement on?

"Conventional wisdom would dictate that when the singer is trying to hit the high note and not quite getting there, the last thing you should do is tickle him! No tickling the lead singer when he is reaching for a note that he can no longer hit, OK?" JMS, post-audience visit during The One I Love in Bergen, 2008

Two things. One: something I read but can't for the life of me remember. Two, I can't really say here. But I think he did. Just a hunch though, could be wrong.
I know, very vague.....

i thought the only lyrics mike wrote were rockville? i may be wrong... i love the song, but not as a love song. i think its a really sad song and sounds like someone desperately trying to hold onto a relationship that's not there anymore, not two people in love.
wagtail described it better.
