Mike Mills joined the boys on stage tonight in Nashville for the last song of the encore. Mike played Peter's Rickenbacker, Peter played drums, Bill played bass and Scott played Robyn's guitar. I don't know the name of the song they played, it may have been an improv or a cover. I know the phrase "What You See" was repeated a lot and at the end Robyn said, "I'm out of lyrics." If it is a real song, I hope someone who was there knows what it was.
Here's the rest of the setlist:
I Often Dream Of Trains
What You Is
Out Of The Picture
Saturday Groovers
Airscape
Sixteen Years
Television
Vibrating
Flesh Number One Beatle Dennis
Hurry For The Sky
Somewhere Apart
I'm Falling
Madonna Of The Wasps
Up To Our Nex
Beautiful Queen
Authority Box
---
The Wreck Of The Arthur Lee
The Lizard
Kingdom Of Love
Goodnight Oslo
???

Last song was "Listening to the Higsons", with some of the lyrics from the Velvet Underground's "Sister Ray". Tremendous show too.

Thanks for the setlist.

Hello Murmursians,

What a night! I was there at the Exit/In here in Nashville. I thought I was going to break the story but dhutchins beat me to it. I'm still trying to collect my thoughts but it was unbelievable. First, Bobby Bare, Jr. opened up for the band and played a great set. He and his dad are local heroes here so it was great to see him. I met him and he said Scott got him the gig. There weren't many people in attendance as I expected on a Monday night and the economy probably took a toll on people's wallets. That and Robyn Hitchcock and the Venus Three are playing at the Bonnaroo Festival in Manchester in June. So I thought some people might sit this one out. But man did they miss out.

The band came out and I went to stand over by Peter's side of the stage. Everything seemed normal and then, out of nowhere, Mike came from backstage and walked over and stood right behind me to watch the show. I looked again to make sure and low and behold it was him. He was standing right beside a guy who was a roadie and did the lights and video on the Accelerate Tour and a woman who works for their promoter AC Entertainment here in town. I waited a little while and met him during the set. When Bill sang back up for a tune Mike called out his name and told a few jokes and laughed at some of Robyn's funny comments. Then he left and went back during the encore break and I knew something was going on.

As the first post said Mike came out and they switched instruments like Untitled with him playing Peter's guitar and him on drums. Mike said at the end of the show that that was the best band you'll see in two years. He was right. It was like a Robyn song: surreal. I waited a little bit until the end and met Peter too. He was at the merchandise booth and signed my CD. He and Robyn were both there greeting fans.

The weird thing is that almost nobody recognized Mike in the crowd but me. And I also don't know the name of the last song. But it was a great thing. It was almost an REM reunion in my hometown. If Michael had been there it would have been perfect. What a night.

it's a real fucking shame that the band felt it was ok to do a show on a monday night at 9:45. coulddn't they have done the show at the same time on the weekend? the only time a show comes that is at a reasonable price and the time fucking sucks. pisses me off. it's getting to where going to shows is near fucking impossible. it used to be shows started at a decent enough time that you got home in time to watch the tonight show.

well damn. the show was more than likely 2 hours long. one wouldn't get to bed til at least 12:30 if they're lucky. but more than likely 1:00 would be the earliest one would get to bed. i guess they don't care. they don't have responsibilities. they're big time celebrities. must be nice.

Here's a link to the photo session from Robyn and the V3 playing live in at Georgia State University for the indieATL series.  Anybody know how to access the live session?

The evening sounds amazing.  To have Mike there would be incredible.  I'm not really all that well acquainted with Robyn's work, but I do like Goodnight, Osloand am looking forward to hearing it live next week here in Motown.

Any other Murmusians in town for the show?

I didn't get home until after 1:00. Waited around after the show to get a cd and get it signed by Peter and Robyn. And they were both at the merch booth within 10 minutes after the show.

I don't make a habit of going to shows during the week that much either, but if it's someone I really want to see I'm not going to let losing a little sleep stop me. And this was a show that was well worth whatever sleep i missed out on.

i don't think this has anything to do with them being celebrities / not caring / etc.  keep in mind that they probably don't plan what night they play in any given city, and they can't play all of their shows on the weekend.  i don't know how things are in nashville, but in austin, 10:00 is an average start time (for the opener - maybe 9:00 on a weeknight).  the headliner often doesn't go on until 11:00 or 12:00.  this doesn't have anything to do with how famous the band is or what their responsibilities are - it's just the way it works.

Saw Robyn & V3 (and Mills) last night in Atlanta.  Great show!  Tin Cup Prophet opened and they were amazing. I'd only heard that cover they did on the fan club package, so it was a great surprise. I didn't even realize there'd be an opening act.

Anyway, Robyn was his usual hilarious, wacky, self and entertained us fully.  Only regret was that they didn't do "Your Head Here" - I really dig it.

I'm sure it's different everywhere but here some of the clubs actually listen to their patrons in regard to early shows during weeknights and Sundays. Even then, when I lived further away I still had to miss out on several concerts I wanted to see simply because of having to drive back home after the show or getting up at an ungodly hour the next morning to leave for work.
"We were listening to the UNC radio (station) there and they were playing an R.E.M. song. I like R.E.M. fine, but at the end of it, the DJ says, 'Ya that was R.E.M., the sound of the new South'. I looked at my roommate and we said, Gawd, if that's the sound of the new South, I preferred it when it was on the skids. That's how we got the name."

Got back into Athens from Atlanta at 3:00am. Was SO worth it on a class night.

All of REM showed up last night best I could tell. I saw what I thought was Stipe, Berry, and Mills show up together during the opener. Mills later joined Robyn and the 3 onstage for the last song of the encore.

It was really nice of Robyn and Peter to come out and sign stuff. They signed the setlist for me and were really chatty.

I managed to record the R.E.M.sideproject clusterf*** at the end.

GREAT stuff! Always good to see Peter drumming... :D

Have you gotten confirmation that Bill (and JMS) indeed were there?

Atlanta gig (with Mills joining the encore) is on dime now.

"Of course you liked early R.E.M. best," I want to say. "You were 17 years old and drunk on tequila and in love with a girl who didn't know you existed, and 'Harborcoat' summed up your melancholy mood like it was written just for you."

They do have responsibilities. One responsibility is to fit in as many shows as possible in a given geographic area. And they probably can't swing a decent tour working only two nights a week, even if it means some of their more elderly and/or feeble fans won't be able to stay up.

Hell, I'm pushing 50 and even I can stay up late on a weeknight once or twice a year.
