Twenty nine years ago today, in a church on Oconee Street in Athens, GA, a band then known as Twisted Kites (for one night only) played. 29 years later, this band has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, released 15 records, sold more than 70 million records world wide and continues to push forward, making awesome music, awesome shows and being awesome people.

In celebration of the birthday, R.E.M. HQ has posted a collection of videos.

And soon, Murmurs.com will be launching (probably around Murmurs.com's 13th birthday on April 26) a special site for the year leading up to R.E.M's 30th anniversary.

Personally, both anniversaries mean a lot. I've been a fan of R.E.M. for more than 20 years now. I'm turning 30 in 5 days and in a few months, a little Murmursian enters the family.

We're lucky to have had R.E.M. for as long as we have, making great music. I'm lucky to call them friends. I'm grateful for this site and I hope the next year and more after are as awesome as the 29 preceding them.

Thank you Ethan for providing this site. Although many of my friends are not big fans of R.E.M., this site provides a forum for people to express their opinions. I was elated to learn of their 30th anniversary today. My family could not believe how elated I was until they saw the article on remhq.com. In deference to the anniversary and new beginnings, I shaved my beard. Now all Michael has to do is follow my example. I am 42 years old and will be 43 in November. R.E.M. has enriched my life since 1983.

I can't believe they've been a band almost as long as I've been alive. But they've done great work.

Happy anniversary, REM. :) We love you!

Also, Happy 1st birthday to Accelerate!!!

They will never understand how they have touched my life and many others.

Seeing Peter with Robyn the other week makes me think that these guys are actually getting better with age....

Happy birthday REM.  I love your work soooo much.
I can still remember the very day that I went to visit my cousin Greg in Sydney and he was playing a bran new record that he had just purchased.  That record was murmur playing on his marantz system. It was loud and it was pure and I was in love with REM's music from that moment. :)

...

That's really a great idea!!

I just can agree with what's posted before: They touched my life, my thoughts, my moods and my taste of music 18 years ago and it hasn't stopped, yet!
And of course: HAAPPYY BIRTHDAY, REM!!!

Happy Belated Birthday, R.E.M.!

I have been a loyal fan for nearly 19 years. And now my 19 year old son is a huge fan. He was at the Boston o8 show and loved every minute of it!
It was love at first listen for me. You have impacted my life in such profound ways that I cannot find the words to express my gratitude. Your music, your light, dispels dark shadows in my life. Your music and your inspiration is a medicine that I can never overdose on. Michael, you introduced me to Patti Smith who has become a great teacher of mine. Peter, you introduced me to Jack Kerouac who has become a spiritual guardian of mine. These are wonderful treasures worth more than all the diamonds and gold in the world. Thank you so very much for your passion and talent and for being true to your art, and to yourselves. You are - by Jack Kerouac's definition - a genius.
I truly love you, R.E.M.
Love, Peace, & Faith Everyday
XOXO
Andrea Marie
