Stevie Knicks (sic)?? First of all, they spelled her name wrong. She's not a basketball team. Second of all she doesn't belong on a greatest singer list, FFS. Ridiculous.

ETA--Who the fuck is Toots Hibbert?

[quote name='ETA--Who the fuck is Toots Hibbert?[/QUOTE']

I actually think Toots Hibbert (of Toots and the Maytals) deserves to be on there. He's the greatest reggae singer, with his rich, soulful voice. I think he's as essential to the genre as Bob Marley, if not more.

It's so weak that they left Stipe off. Such a unique and powerful voice. The fact that his vocals were so compelling even through his "mumbling" phase is proof in itself.

This is no surprise, though. Except for its political writing, Rolling Stone is pretty much unreadable these days.

Yeah, sorry, but Toots Hibbert deserves to be on the list about a billion times more than Stipe does. Just because you haven't heard of someone doesn't mean they're shit.

Honestly while I love R.E.M. a lot (obviously) I don't think Stipe is necessarily one of the best vocalists of all time. Not that everyone on that list is, of course. But the first thirty or so are right on.

I'm surprised Danny Elfman isn't in there, but then I'm weird that way.

I didn't say Toots Hibbert was shit. I didn't know who he was. People on the list, while not being shit exactly that I take issue with are Stevie Nicks, Dion (fucking DION? Do me a favor) and Rod Stewart. Then there are ones that are just personal taste. For example I can't stand Bjork but a lot of people love her and think she's fantastic. I think Elvis was a great showman but not necessarily one of the greatest singers *shrug* James Taylor? Mediocre, boring and nothing special at all. He wrote a couple of great ones, his voice is musical valium.
I suppose in any list like this it comes down to taste. It's difficult to measure these things, in the end it's how singers move their audience. I agree that most in the top 30 are deservedly there. Some of the others, not. But of course that's just me.

Honestly, Rolling Stone makes the WORST lists.  Their 500 greatest songs of all time list was essentially just a bunch of songs from the 60's and 70's.  I do think that was the best era of music, but they leave so much out.  For instance, which R.E.M. songs were on the list? Radio Free Europe and Losing My Religion.  Both deserve to be on there, but there should be others.

Also, their 100 greatest artists of all time.  Hardly anyone from 1980-now and R.E.M. wasn't even on the list at all.  You should see it, it's pretty ridiculous.

The problem is, there are so many different types of music, you simply can't compare Born to Run with It Takes A Nation of Millions..  They need to either make their lists from genre to genre or from decade to decade.  It would be much more balanced that way.

Christina Aguilera (Yeah, I don't think so!)

That list is a big load of rubbish. Since they put Christina and Michael Jackson on there, I'm almost surprised that they didn't put Brittney Spears on there too!

Paul McCartney is on that list twice.

Rolling Stone's lists have been extremely predictable. Extremely. They always include the same names and faces.

Personally, I think Sinead O'Connor has the voice of an angel, and find Kate and Cindy's (from the B 52's) harmonies up there with the Beach Boys and the Beatles. You will never find them on Rolling Stone list, Ever.

And I can't believe that Axl Rose is fairly high up there but Tori Amos doesn't appear at all.

Axl Rose is one that I can support bashing. No way is that screech deserving of any accolades.

Also, Michael Jackson absofuckinglutely deserves his spot on the list. If anything, he should be higher.

And Rod Stewart, as much as he may suck now, at one point was one of the greatest singers in rock and roll. His first few solo albums, his work with the Faces and his work with the Jeff Beck Band are all ample evidence of this. Just pretend he died in the mid 70's like I do.

I might ask you the same thing. I don't know how you could not think Michael Jackson has one of the best voices in the history of recorded music.

Sorry, but no I don't agree.

As stated earlier Tori Amos should have been on that list and Kate Bush.

I agree with Michael Jackson: he should be much higher on the list. It just goes to show you how much of a joke those lists have become.
