Theres so many and they say they are real. Way too many to be real IMO. Theres things called Autopens that sign like the real deal, Im guessing these are those.
Now I have no chance of meeting REM, and REM say they only sign things for charity. So how are all these autographs up for auction?
I think they should sell legitimate autographs on REMHQ for a donation to charity, say 20 dollars, then we would know they are real. It would be easy to set up a paypal account for a charity.
My complaint is, if they only sign for charity, how come so many are up for sale? theres hundreds!
At 20 dollars each, thats a lot of serious money that could be raised for katrina victims or Amnesty International or such.
I would actually pay about 100 dollars for an autographed photo of the band and thats a lot of money to me, if I knew it was going to the right place.
If I buy one off Ebay, anyone could have signed it.
I tried to buy one of the signed books, but I was too late.

Although it does say on REMHQ that they only sign stuff for charity, clearly they sign things for fans when the leave a gig etc. Also they sign things for Warners from time to time. I have a blockmount poster from Reveal, that was signed when they were in Australia for the 2001 promo tour. I got it from a friend at Warners who said they signed a bunch of them at Warners offices.
With anything on Ebay, take it with a grain of salt and do some research. You can usually pick shoddy work.

Yes. They don't venture down here much so i took matters into my own hands. No chance this year to get back to the UK or US for shows. Your rumour of Aussie dates is great news though.

I've got a signed photo by Michael Mike & Peter which they were very gracious to sign when I saw them going into BBC Radio in London earlier this year - it's an old photo, but hey, I wasn't going to complain! I think they're happy to sign for a genuine fan, but are reluctant to issue loads of stuff that's going to end up.....yes, you've guessed it, on ebay!

An autograph is not only an autograph.. it reminds you the place you had it, tthe meeting with the R.E.M. members, it reminds you all the situation... I'd never buy an autograph on e.bay.. I could never feel it as MINE...

Thats why I reckon they should charge and the proceeds go to charity!.
if theres a heap of them out there, then the price on Ebay would plummet!
What do you think would happen if I sent a letter to REMHQ with 100 dollars in it for a charity and asked for a signed photo in return?

I totally agree with you - the signature is awesome to have - but it's the memories that go with it - ie meeting the band/member that make it so special. What's the point of saying "I've got Peter Buck's signature" when you haven't actally met him?

Very ironically, this is exactly what the case is with me. The pic in my sig is from the Seattle signing of Hello. Avalon very kindly got me the book and had it autographed by Peter. I wish I had of met him, but I cherish that book greatly. So, my situation is a little different. I hope I will get to meet them one day.

But he signed it for you - not just for anyone - so it makes it worth having - and you have the story behind it. And you didn't pay a stranger for it!!

Yes, he signed it for me, even though I wasn't there physically. She also knew that that particular pic was important to me as it was my avatar at the time and she chose it.
I am always weary of buying autographed stuff anyways as a lot of it is fake.

I have a lot of their autographs, at least 6 of peters and three or four of JMS and Mike's, they have always been kind about it. Geting JMS's autograph is obviously the most difficult. Peter seems to enjoy meeting folks, his is just too cool for words...

I think the whole racket of selling sports and music memorabilia is a joke. so much stuff is not authentic, it just can't be.
Take for instance the fact that often the talent will write: "to ___(your name here)" with the autograph...

I agree with not buying signatures on Ebay because I'd rather have the "in-person" experience. But, I also agree with what I did for Lynda because Lynda and I know each other, and I got it for her. The personal aspect is still there, ya know? I don't doubt there are fake REM autographs on Ebay, but I do think the majority are probably real. REM are rather accessible as far as big name bands and celebrities go.

Laura,
I frequently send my thank you your way. As you know, this meant a huge amount to me and I will never forget it. You're the best.
Lynda
PS I'm going to explode soon if they don't announce further dates.

The only things i ever got signed was the Wiesbaden setlist from 2003 and the Lodalen setlist from later the same year, they hang proudly in my living room, Stine had quite a few things signed also.
When it comes to signed items on ebay i would stay clear from them unless it is an auction by the band themselves.

I am an avid collector of R.E.M. momorabilia, and a lot of my collection has come from EBay. Although there have been a few mistakes made in the early days of my collecting, you can generally pick out the real from fake signatures.
The first thing that you should look for is the autographed promo pictures, especially from the 1980s. R.E.M. actually sent out signed promo pics to fan club members during that time. They were signed in pen, except for one with Michael in a top hat, where Peter signed in Sharpie. You can usually tell the age by looking at the yellowing.
R.E.M. only signs photos in the spot they are in the picture. For example, Michael will not sign where Pete is in the picture. The one signature that may fool you is Michael's. He tends to hide his signature within his body and has signed his name in different ways: JMS, Michael, Michael Stipe, etc. Lately Mike or one of them will add a date to the signature.
Look at the extensive Publicity Archive set up by Kip Teague online. It's pretty easy to match the photos. However, there are many other photos that are not in that archive.
Lately there have been a plethora of signed photos from the Up and Reveal photo shoots/press kits. They are the easiest and least expensive to acquire.
It does not help that Michael and Pete have been signing other objects besides the Hello book at the book signings, but many of those objects have only been signed for personal use and have not wound up on EBay.
COAs are ridiculous, but every now and then you'll see a PSA/DNA backing with the photo.
No, the signatures do not replace actually meeting the band. However, not everyone has that kind of access. I was lucky enough to meet Michael and David Belisle in NYC. It was a terrific experience, as I had dreamed of meeting Michael for a long time. I had a poster from the band "Band Of" that he would not sign. That was a band he was in at the same time that R.E.M. was getting started. I thought it might make the piece very valuable. Instead, I had him sign my hat (and still use it).
If you ever have any doubts about the authenticity of an item, use the Murmurs community. I'd certainly try to help you out.
No, I don't advise sending money to the fan club headquarters for an autographed picture. It's better to find another source. The posters and pictures have been coming up regularly on EBay in both the United States and UK. Anytime there is a tour, you will see a spike in the merchandise.
I hope that helps.
