was more a reference to having been around IT long enough to remember when mp3's were just new lol which i am sure there are a few of here can say the same lol. So it was just a glib remark back was all.

Like most things is just your personal preference.

I dont like paying for a tune via a download. I prefer having something physical for my hard earned cash. As someone mentioned I dont want to have to print out my own covers etc

Yes i love the band and buy their stuff, but not this time. If it was on a cd or viynl I would do but not as a download.

And as for viynl.. well its funny how the music industry still recommend it for long term storage of music and not CD or some harddrive somewhere :)   And besides.. you cant beat a nice gatefold cover :)

I see your question has already been answered but I do wonder if any copies were actually printed up before they decided not to release the three song version as a physical single. I also wonder if the single for Man-Sized Wreath will go the same route? The two song version of Hollow Man is still available for order through SirenDisc.com and the Man-Sized Wreath single is still available for pre-order with a release date of July 18th.

As for the download vs. physical product debate, I still prefer the latter myself, it doesn't mean I live in a fucking cave or that I'm stuck in the past, I just prefer an actual physical product. I also still prefer shopping in record stores whether it be for vinyl or compact discs.

Yeah but the files are only on your pc if you don't back up version [data DVDs carry 100s of albums] or make a music CD version.

I like the physical CD thing too, nice packaging etal, but CD sales are down, down down, Coldplay and Lil Wayne [1,000,000 sales] are not a sign of the norm and that everything is hunky dory and the industry is a&k... also true, aac and MP3s aren't the answer either especially at $0.99 each for, in many cases,  DRM loaded compressed files? why pay that when you can make your own from either your own discs or a friends?

Longterm better and fairer priced quality downloads are probably the answer...

Btw CD singles are awful nowadays, 1 song and a video on a [technically speaking] 77min disc for $3.00 + some dull generic artwork? nope, don't think so...

I wonder if we're seeing the last of the physical CD singles from R.E.M., period? I guess it bodes well that there is at least a 2 track version of Hollow Man available as well as pre-order for Man-Sized Wreath but it still makes wonder why the 3 track version Hollow Man (in a physical CD version) disappeared all of a sudden.

I remember back in the olden days they said Vinyls were dead. Yet they seem to be having a revival.  I do wonder if things will go full circle - and people will turn back to CDs from downloads - give it a few years and a few pc crashes - cos I'm sure not everyone backs everything up.  

I do download and will probably buy this, but I would rather have a CD - and I don't live in a cave either - just enough years to hear the 'new technology' thing once too often and prefer value for money and a disc in my hand.

And here's another situation for Gazza, what if it was a promo copy on eBay that you weren't supposed to buy (but still could)?  Hm?

I have to agree, somewhat with most of you here.  I too, miss the days of buying an actual CD at a record store.  But, sadly it looks like those days are fading fast.  As far as this release goes, I will be purchasing it, cuz I'm a completist.  If I'm smart, I'll back it up onto a CD-R, or portable harddrive.  I've experienced at least 2 computer crashes in the last few months.  I'd hate to lose anymore music. ;)

Actually, for th emost part if you had a catastrophic problem like that. iTunes willa ctually provide everything you bought form them for free again.
