If i steal a car - a STEAL it from some person... but for torrents i only COPY it!

If you show or give this DVD to your friend - does it mean that he steals something from you or from record company? You share live concerts (Non-Murmurs Torrents thread) is it legal than?

My point was that if you can't afford it maybe you should save up some money so you can.

If I give my DVD away that's my full right and no one gets hurt (except me because it's a really good DVD). But if I copy it that's illegal and yes, you steal from the record company that way.

Live concerts aren't officially released and thus not illegal.

Well...that's not entirely true. The music is still covered by copyright, but R.E.M. and the publishing rights' holders (implicitly) allow us to share certain recordings here anyway.

You, and no.

Well, actually, I do have a version of "Road Movie" on VHS that I taped off MTV whenever it first aired back in 1996 or so.  Personally, I didn't think it was all that great, and certainly not worth going to jail over.

if i can't afford it now - i don't buy it any way, so if download it - it doesnt matter for record company! BUT someday i will buy or go to concert... Music is an art, not only commercial side. You see?

And if you post camrip (in this thread) it a small crime too... like camrip in cinema or circus or elsewhere.

EphSooner, i have it on vhs too, but wanna have it with stereo track.

Unfortunately not. This is a private site. The owners rules say no sharing of commercially available recordings. When you joined you will have agreed to these rules.  So even if we wanted to help we couldn't.

Welcome though:)

Can I ask a genuine question about sharing of copyrighted REM stuff? If the restriction is that it mustn't still be commercially available, then does that make sharing old b-sides ok? I'm thinking of the b-sides from the How The West Was Won single, I've never managed to get hold of it (I know it's on Amazon Marketplace for £40, but that's obviously a bit silly for a single and presumably doesn't count as being commercially available). I'd quite like those songs, is anyone allowed to upload them?

Obviously no worries if not, it just occurred to me reading page 1 of this thread that it might possibly be OK.

Be Mine (Mike on the bus version)
Love Is All Around
Sponge

I really want the alternate version of Be Mine, I don't know whether it's anything special having never heard it but it's a nice song and I'm certainly curious.

To the best of my recollection the version of Be Mine isn't all that different from the original version but then again, it's been a long time since I last heard it. I'm pretty sure Love Is All Around is available on other singles (though I'm not sure if they're now out of print). If I'm not mistaken I'm thinking there was a live version (from MTV Unplugged) and a studio version (I Shot Andy Warhol soundtrack). Sponge is from a Vic Chesnutt tribute album called Gravity of the Situation that was compiled by the Sweet Relief foundation that also put together another very worthy tribute album for Victoria Williams (which features many gems, including Pearl Jam's cover of Crazy Mary). To the best of my knowledge, the Vic tribute album is still in print.
"We were listening to the UNC radio (station) there and they were playing an R.E.M. song. I like R.E.M. fine, but at the end of it, the DJ says, 'Ya that was R.E.M., the sound of the new South'. I looked at my roommate and we said, Gawd, if that's the sound of the new South, I preferred it when it was on the skids. That's how we got the name."

Good point about the tribute albums, I hadn't considered that. The Andy Warhol one is still widely available, although I'm not so fussed about that song as I have an unplugged version of it from way back and I was never that much of a fan of it (the Wet Wet Wet association is pretty hard to get over for me!). The Vic Chesnutt tribute seems to be out of print but there are cheap copies on both ebay and Amazon. I listened to the sample of Sponge on Amazon, it sounded really good actually.

Sponge is definitely one of my favorite covers of theirs. If you can locate a copy of Gravity of the Situation the whole album is pretty damn good. Same for the Victoria Williams Sweet Relief tribute album.
