A new story entry has been added:

Quote

Michael Stipe did a book signing with David Belilse at Book Soup in Hollywood. It was a huge turn out and everyone seems to love David's book. The book captures both the humor and the art of the band perfectly, and is the rare collection of photographs that captures the band in unguarded, candid and even emotional moments. You can order the book via the link on the left.
Here's some shots from tonight:

This was so much fun.  My best friend bought a book so I wouldn't be standing alone and nervous.  I've been a fan for 20 yrs, fan clubber for 13 years, but have never met any band members (they don't get to Phoenix much).  Everyone was friendly.  Michael was very nice and seemed in good spirits (I got a picture with him).  Peter was there as well, shopping--what a treat!  The biggest laugh I got though was from my friend's boyfriend.  He is not an R.E.M. fan, but came to do some book shopping.  He was in the store shopping while we were waiting to go in--he was walking around and we are watching him down one aisle.  Her boyfriend is a big, pierced and tattooed industrial music fan who doesn't like the general public/gets annoyed by large crowds, etc.    Peter walks/bumps almost into him and her boyfriend, not knowing who he is (or probably caring), just sort of looked at Peter, like "wtf?"   I said to my friend--I love that he (her boyfriend) is so unaffected by any of this! I guess you had to be there--but the looks on their faces made me laugh--"fight, fight!" lol.

Thanks for the photos.

A few of my friends were there last night.  They called me afterwards and 3 of them took turns to tell me their experiences.  They all had a great time and  said it was a good atmosphere as it usually is around any R.E.M. member.
I hope the book does well, David is a real talent.

The book signing was good fun! I had a good time talking with a few people that I met there. Michael was great.

After he signed my book, I asked Michael to sign my guitar. He said he would. He saw that I had a signature on it and asked who it was. I told him that Daniel Lanois signed it in 2003. Michael said: "Oh cool, I wouldn't sign it if it were anyone gross". I said: "Nope, no Motley Crue". He said: "I didn't say that" (laughing). I said: "Nor Rod Stewart". He let out a big laugh and smiled. I told him I read something about his "love" for Rod Stewart in a book once. He laughed again.

After my two books got signed, I saw Scott McCaughey walk in. I went up and talked to him for a few minutes. He was very nice. He signed my guitar too. I'd told him that I saw the Austin City Limits show last Saturday and loved it. He mentioned that they'd had a show that night so they all missed the TV airing. I asked him a few guitar questions which he answered. He was a really nice guy.

I am not sure but I thought that I saw Bill Rieflin walk in. Anyone else see him or not? I was talking to Scott at the time and the person that was or was not Bill had come and gone by then.

Anywho...  Thanks to Michael for doing the signing. The book is really cool. I recommend it to all REM fans.

Cheers!

Sounds like you had a great time. By the way, what guitar were you having them sign. ;)

Yeah, cheers!  I love Daniel Lanois - his album "Shine" is one of my favourite albums in the last ten years.

My boyfriend served the lovely Rod Stewart in a menswear store some years ago, or more accurately, Rod was present but my boyfriend served Rod's staff entourage.  Suffice it to say, he's not a Rod Stewart fan.  :D

ODD? ODD? Great you mean, great!

Michael had read the interview blog:

and David took pictures of your tatoo and they both had a good stare at - the artwork!

Michael complemented sincerely on your continuing and unrelenting fandom!

A good thing happened when you went to get your picture book signed.

I was standing in line and when David signed the book he asked who is the tattoo of. I told him it was Mike and he asked to take some photos of it. David grabbed his camera and started taking some pictures. Michael leaned forward to look at it closer. He told me he read the blog about me and he heard of me and thought that the details of the tattoo was amazing. And then he said my devotion was very beautiful. I blushed and told him thank you :o

I'm glad something really special happened for you Frances.  You've seen the band about 40 times now right?   I'm sure Michael was really only looking at your tattoo. ;)
I am happy more of my R.E.M. pals and all those fans are getting the chance to meet Michael.
