David - thanks for the review. I was there too as part of a whole weekend of Sasquatch.
REM put in a great performance. My g/f and I agreed that pouring sideways rain (that Stephen Malkmus would joke about the following night as "Crooked Rain") only made REM's show better. They took the slightly adverse conditions had fun with it and really nailed the songs.
I don't have time for a full review but here are some thoughts. The band was in a truly jovial and good-natured mood. MS's voice was incredible, his banter really funny, Peter Buck was really into the show, they kept the slower songs to a minimum (cool), this was a really rocking show and for this long time REM fan I almost peed my pants when they played "Harborcoat" perhaps my favourite "chestnut". Other favs - everything from "Accelerate" which translates so well live, a spot on version of "These Days", and "Ignoreland" which I never so coming. The set list was a great mix of new, old and favourites. The band sound great as a five piece and I think if they sound this good two shows in and they keep this attitude for the whole tour everyone who sees them is in for a treat. As someone who has been a fan since 1986 I was blown away be the energy and enthusiasm on show from a band who have been performing for 28 years.
Here's some highlights I collected from other sources:
Seattle PI Blog Review:

What's The Frequency (watch what MS does with his sock)
Ignoreland
Pot Reference

Last but no least it was a great weekend. Other stellar performances included Michael Franti, The Whigs, MIA, Pela, Stephen Malkmus, Tegan and Sara, The Blakes,Fleet Foxes, the Hives and the National. Unfortunately we had to leave on Monday night before the Flaming Lips came on.

...Rain is good..." began Mills, "because it makes the grass grow."
After a pause, Michael incredulously glanced over at Mike. "Mike, did you just make a pot reference??? What the f---!!!" Then after a few seconds, Michael said something like "I'll take it.[/drupal]

Actually, he doesn't say "I'll take it."
From the clip you can hear:
Mike: "Makes the grass grow"
Michael: "Mike, was that a pot reference? What the fuck?"
Mike: "I know no one here DOES that but I just thought I'd throw it out there."
Michael: "I'm fine with that, actually."

A Pain Through the End?
"We were listening to the UNC radio (station) there and they were playing an R.E.M. song. I like R.E.M. fine, but at the end of it, the DJ says, 'Ya that was R.E.M., the sound of the new South'. I looked at my roommate and we said, Gawd, if that's the sound of the new South, I preferred it when it was on the skids. That's how we got the name."

Seattle's known for it's rain isn't it? So I guess "Harbourcoat" would be the perfect song for the occasion.
I'm glad the rain actually made the show better....if anything, you have to accept getting a bit wet in a crowd now and then

Aw Man. I even made a joke on Friday that all I wanted to hear was Harborcoat, and knowing the amazing set list we got that night that they'd probably play it at the next show. Dang. Oh well. Another time.
"I don't know why she never gets anywhere with you."

The rain certainly helped the Rock am Ring show in '05. What an amazing DVD that is! I've only had a chance to watch R.E.M. Live once so far, but I'm pretty sure I like the Rock am Ring one better.

Seattle is known for rain, but this was in a completely different place- three hours inland. The rain wasnt that heavy, but it was nice. And, yes, it was sideways..

(I'm used to sideways rain. Wellington is known for its wind).
Yes it was inland, in an area know for Bigfoot sightings, no doubt?
