Dear Fans:
Beginning on the 17thth of April, 2008, as part of a Charity-Auction, we are auctioning the current R.E.M-CD signed by Michael Stipe. The CD was personally signed by Mr. Stipe on the 28th of March in Erfurt/Germany (german TV-Show "Wetten dass").
Background-Information:
On May 19th, 2007 our friend Laeusel (Klaus Sommer) had a very bad motorcycle accident. A car made a left-hand turn into oncoming traffic and struck him. After several months in a vegetative state, he is now living in a home for the disabled. An evaluation, made towards the end of his vegetative state, determined that no further rehabilitative therapy would be covered.
Since we visit him on a regular basis, and have done numerous things out of our own initative, we have observed that he has already made great progress. He recognizes us and many things from his environment, talks to us, and can sometimes even remember incidents from his past. We are certain that greater progress would be possible, if he received further support and assistance. For this reason, we have organized a charity open-air event on the 19th of April, 2008 in Wetzlar, Finsterloh (Germany) and two charity-auctions on eBbay (one hand-signed CD by R.E.M and one by Udo Lindenberg, german singer/songwriter). The money we raise is going 100% to the benefit of our friend Laeusel. It will go into a trust-fund and be used to further his progress, by such means as more therapy, ect. Basically, everything that is not funded right now.
My sister who performed as a musician with the tenor Rolando Villazon at "Wetten Dass" in Erfurt spoke to Michael Stipe during the final rehearsal and asked him to support for this cause and received an enthusiastic "Of course!" in response. If this is interesting to people, and if it doesn't conflict with internet-rules, I am happy to add the link to the auction, as soon as it is active.

You must be a real outstanding and wonderful person! It's overwhelming to have such good friends who are still there, literally in good and bad times.

Good luck! I just bid but got immediately outbid (no problem for me, it was more a symbolical bid than anything else).
