Accelerate is number 2 in the german Albumcharts in his first week of release.
Not bad, I think:). They had no chance against Udo Lindenberg, that was foresee. Anyone know how many records they sale? It will be interesting for me to see the Difference between the number 1 "Around the sun" in 2004 and Accelerate.

Also SNSS climbed the singlecharts on position 48 highest place in charts since release at this time.

I think that Accelerate not only will debut in the US at # 1 or #2, it will have staying power. It's getting great word of mouth, and to the extent that it matters, it will get good airplay. I think it will be on the US charts for quite a while. If it sells a million in the US, though, that will be massive.

To give you a comparison or two, here's the first paragraph from Wikipedia's article on Raising Sand, the Alison Krauss/Robert Plant collaboration which came out in November http://en.wikipedia....ki/Raising_Sand :

Quote

Raising Sand is a collaboration album by Robert Plant and Alison Krauss. Released on October 23, 2007, the album debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200 chart, selling about 112,000 copies in its first week, the highest chart position for either artists' solo work; Plant had previously reached #1 with Led Zeppelin.[1] The album entered the Top 5 on the UK Albums Chart, going on to reach #2 in January 2008.

Add to that the fact that, to date, Norah Jones' album Not Too Late which debuted at #1 in its first week, Jan 30-Feb 6, 2007 with 415K sales in the US (I erroneously cited the sales # previously) only has sold 1.5 million so far, and Norah Jones moves a LOT of product. So it's a long shot for REM to sell 1M copies of Accelerate stateside within the next year. Even so, it's a hit and will do well, relative to this tough market environment.

I looked for it,
And I found it,
Miles Standish proud,
Congratulate me. ...

Answer me a question,
I can't itemize, I can't think clearly,
To me for reason it's not there,
I can't even rhyme ...

UK update.

REM register their eighth number one album in all, and their fourth of the 21st century, with Accelerate.

First week sales of 60,778 are lower than their three prior number one albums this decade - Around The Sun opened with sales of 69,676 copies in 2004; the hits compilation In Time with 114,410 sales in 2003; and Reveal with 110,753 in 2001.

REM have had more number one albums in the UK than any other American group

Let's say that's all Vasco Rossi's fault ! Unfortunately this mediocre Italian singer has more success (only in Italy, of course, because abroad he's a perfect "nobody") than U2 and Madonna put together .

With 58% of the tally in, Accelerate has sold 49,681 copies.  That is good for #2 on the chart behind George Strait's Troubadour, who has sold nearly 112,000 copies thus far.

Accelerate is on pace to sell a little over 85,000 copies.  Not bad at all.

So who is this Strait chap? Sounds like a bit of a twat, though it needn't be a pseudonym, I suppose. Maybe it's not his fault. Has anyone heard him? Seems that, in Italy, Germany and possibly the US, R.E.M. are coming 2nd to some local cheeses that no one's heard of elsewhere. Wide world. Narrow interests.

He is a country singer that specializes in traditional Texas swing - not the pop country that rules the format these days in the US.  He has been around since the early 80's and has a huge fanbase of young and old.  Strait is actually his real last name. :)

Thanks! :) I'll withdraw the twat comment right away! (Sorry). So, is he really better than R.E.M.?

While we're on the subject of country music, there are actually only three artists/ bands whose albums I would buy religiously - R.E.M., Scissor Sisters and Garth Brooks.

Still trying to work out the link there myself, but I don't really like any other music.

I've heard of him. ;) I liked country music a lot in the mid 90's. But nowadays I hardly ever listen to this kind of music anymore.

But it's not very good either, or is it? I mean Counting Crows did not release a new album in 5 and a half years and sold over 100.000 copies in the first week. R.E.M. used to be so much bigger then them. Times have changed it seems.
