It seems to me that R.E.M. has made a decision in North America to try to impress some people and they are taking two relatively great bands with them to do it.  Face it R.E.M. could not play these venues without the openers (especially Modest Mouse).  A considerable number of people at the shows will be there for Modest Mouse primarily and believe it or not some (not too many) will leave before R.E.M. plays. I watched a ton of people leave before Pixies at a Weezer/Pixies double bill and the Lollapalooza show in 1995 only had half of its audience when Sonic Youth played after Hole as a pile of younger fans had no interest in the older band.  Seems dumb to me, but it happened.

R.E.M. have been playing 17,000-20,000 seat arena's since 1987 long before there was a modest mouse.  If it wasn't for R.E.M. we wouldn't have many of these other Indie Bands who came after them.  I think they made the path easier for a lot of other bands. Some people I know said, "Who is Modest Mouse?  They are not that popular. I only ever heard one song by them on the radio and it wasn't very good to me.  So they must be a word of mouth band.  R.E.M. alone is what is going to draw people to the shows I'm sure. They played these same size venues with unknown openers like Grant Lee Buffalo, Pete Yorn, Sparklehorse, Angela McCluskey, Now its Overhead and the list goes on.  R.E.M. have never been a band who sold out a huge arena in 4 minutes like Bruce Springsteen or Radiohead can do. And I'm happy for that.   Most of these amphitheaters hold about 15 or more thousand.  I just wish since this tour is so short, or as someone said a road trip that they would have just played small clubs like in Dublin and forget the opening acts. Or just have one completely unknown local band for each show.

Yep. Still some confusion.  I've been getting all the e-mails over the past month or two from HQ, so I'm not sure why this one wouldn't have come through.  And, I just checked remhq, and I don't see anything to this effect on the site, the tour dates page, etc.

Can you confirm whether this was an e-mail so those of us who did not receive it will know whether to contact the fanclub?

Thanks!

Thank you very much! :-)

I think HQ should have spelled out a little more clearly headline wise than "Accelerate mini site launched and 'other news'...".  I'd call that a bit more critical than "other news"!

I wish they would just make announcements instead of announcing that there may soon be an announcement.  I need to buy tickets asap before I have to spend that money on something.

I really hope they do announce the North American presale this week!  I'll be much less anxious after I've ordered tickets for myself and everyone else I'm supposed to buy them for.

I agree, I doubt they'll hit MSG this time around. I'm thinking the Beacon Theatre, Radio City (which would be very cool), or the Theatre at MSG (smaller venue at the Garden).

The Beacon is 2800. Radio City is around 6,000. Roseland is 3,500. Theater at MSG is around 5,000.

Madison Sq Garden is 20,000.

I was at the MSG show in 2004. I think they filled it about 75%. Now, back in the Monster Days, they sold tickets around the back of the stage as well and did multiple nights. The elaborate backdrop used on the last several tours drop the capacity a little bit too. But still, even with Jones Beach on the schedule, doing the NY show at MSG makes the most sense if they're going to just do one NYC proper gig. On the strength of the new record, strong openers and a four year gap between tours (they had played there in 03 as well), I think they could fill MSG. They're playing sheds in other major markets, it would be odd to play a smaller venue in New York.

A jammed Radio City would be great. In terms of generating excitement, it's always good to leave people shut out, but I'm thinking Modest Mouse and The National could fill Radio City on their own.

Last U.S. pre-sale there was only a 4 ticket limit.  So some folks may just need to buy their own.  ;)

Yeah, I'm hoping my other fanclub friend can cover the rest!  I have 2 friends, my boyfriend, my cousin, and my mom who all want to go to Philly!  So, the sooner they've got details for us the better. :o

Just included in the "4 more U.K. concerts" email (at the bottom):

"Stay tuned for North American pre-sale details in the coming weeks"

Consistent with when I talked with REM Athens last week...US tix probably on sale in March sometime.

In 2004, Fan Club members got preferential purchase and location choices.

Are they not doing that this time around??? I cannot find anything on REMHQ about this year's tour.

I am thoroughly confused myself in defining "pre-sale" vs. "fanclub" etc.  I do know there is presale, but I dont know if it is like the fan club tix sale from the 2004 tour.  I just plan to get in on the presale and hope for the best.

My guess is that it will be run similarly to the European leg - fan club members will be given access to buy tickets at least 24 hours before they open up the pre-sale to the rest of the online community (meaning, anyone who has sent in their email on the website, but hasn't paid for the fanclub membership).  (To participate in the sale, fan club membership had to be current around mid-January.)

Fan club members will probably be allotted a number of good seats, but demand for certain locations and restrictions by the show promoters will make it harder to get fantastic seats for some venues through the presale.  Hope this helps - you should check that your email is correct at the REM website and you are able to login at sandbag too.

How do I sign up for the "online fan community"? Whenever I enter my email on the REM HQ, I get a confirmation email, but when I enter my email into Sandbag, it doesn't recognize it.

I believe that you already signed up for the online community by entering your email at REMHQ.  Sandbag probably is not recognizing it because they are only recognizing fanclub members for any future presale at this point.  Any online community presale would most likely come after the fanclub sale, and I would guess that REMHQ would send that info to you if they have your email registered at the site.  That is just my hunch, so if anyone else knows different please correct me.
