I hope they give us at least a few days notice.  I like to have a little time to prepare for these things.

haha! compared to the notice we got for the European ones you've had ages. They were announced Monday, on sale Tuesday. Get planning now, like Avalon!

Mann Center in Philly announced that they will sell public REM tix on April 5th.
Pre-sale for Mann Center members will go on sale before this date, but did not give a date.

So, i guess we are getting close.  I also think the delay in announcing tix sales is all marketing so that it corresponds with the CD release.  Radio & print cost money; can make one Ad and get both promoted.

Oh dear!

The R.E.M. concert in my area is on 31 May 2008 (Berkeley, CA).

Problem is that morning I am leaving on a week-long business trip. I'll be in Philadelphia! I've never been to the North before. I think that's in the Deep North, or is that New England?

I checked the flights later that evening, but it would be too hairy getting to the airport in time. I can't get up in the middle of R.E.M. concert and just leave!

I'm in shock! I'm heartbroken. :(

Philly is mid-Atlantic, definitely not "Deep North." Lol. 've never heard that expression and I grew up in New England!  Oh and Philly isn't part of New England. NE is Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Vermont, and Massachusetts only. I think there's a definite difference in the feel of New England vs. Mid-Atlantic. I've lived in Connecticut, Boston, and Philly before moving to Seattle. Either way, I think you'll experience the dramatic east coast vs. west coast vibe. :)

What about getting a red eye (1AM-ish) from Oakland.  That would be my suggestion- if it is at all possible.  Or you could go to LA or the Vancouver (or even Sasquatch)  shows before your business trip.  Good luck.

I know this is off topic, but I literally just came home from Philadelphia a few hours ago.  Wonderful city but please be very, very careful.  It has been 15 years since I was last there and it has changed a lot.  Homelessness and crime is rampant!  I swear I am amazed I got out of there without getting mugged, and I am originally from NYC! This is in the major tourist areas, not West or North Philly where crime is expected.  Just make sure if walking around that you go with a group - never alone. The area around Independence Hall/Liberty Bell etc. is very safe since there are lots of police and National park security around.  Also the museum area is lovely. Not wanting to scare you, but I was just surprised how bad its gotten - we can thank the lovely depressed economy that G.W.B. has given us.

I am sorry that you had such a negative experience. I am not sure where you were in Philly, but, after 3 and 1/2 years (2004-present) in the area, I have never worried about my livelihood. Do not let this change your mind, or anyone's mind about Philly, though. I have worked in Philly, in a not so great area (with part of one job being a door-to-door campaign), and, as with any major city, there is always need to be careful. But as for worrying about getting mugged, this is not an overall major concern. So, those thinking of going to the 6.18 show at the Mann Center, please do not be deterred. Now, just to find out the pre-sale date....

The area around the Mann Center is not the best, but you'll be in good spot.  I went to school in Philly, partied, still dinner-out, etc; live in South Jersey.  It has it's good & bad areas...  Here is something from Wikipedia about John F. Street and the last 8 years this Democrat was at the helm:  "The murder rate in Philadelphia hit a seven-year high during Street's tenure. In 2005 there were 380 murders, up from 330 in 2004. Forty-five percent of those murdered were 25 or younger. 2006 saw 406 murders in the city, including a Philadelphia police officer. [8] This murder trend continued to escalate into 2007, with 127 murders occurring by the end of April, 2007, a rate far in excess of the larger cities of New York, Los Angeles and Chicago. [1]. At least one commentator referred to Street as being "strangely silent" in his efforts to reduce the city's murder rate. [2]".  Phiily has more murders than NYC even tho NYC has 6x the population.  He was on line getting an IPhone when the new murder rate stats came out; he refused to answer the reporters questions on this topic.  The list goes on and on with him: his brother being brought-up on charges, the Ron White problems that brought the FBI in to bug Streets office...  It was 391 murders in 2007.

I don't think this forum is for Politics at all; but to blame Bush as to the cause of Philly's issues (while the last 8 years were ruled by Democrat Street) is riduculous.  Secondly, if you where to study some economics, President's don't send Economies into a Recession; to very overly simplify, people like you and me send them into the spin & pull them out.  We spend our way into Recessions and spend our way out.  Let's keep it to music and the like, shall we ???

As for the recession (or the impending one, or the lack of one at all depending on who you listen to), presidents may not cause them on their own, but ours, who is a certifiable idiot (recently he said he did not hear of the possibility of $4 gas?!?), drove us into a war, with congress's backing of course, that has hurt the world and our standing in it. With so much money being spent that could have been used elsewhere, W. has to be seen as at least partly to blame (if only one domino -- the first -- in a string of them that have tumbled over in this economic downturn).

Thankfully the slumping economy has not driven the cost of concert tickets to go up too much. But, when I travel to other cities to see R.E.M. on this tour, I know the gas costs will certainly be felt in my wallet (probably not enough to stop me from buying more t-shirts, though :)).

Definitely no reason to skip Philly if you plan on seeing a show there. Just make sure that you stay in a "safe" area, ie. touristy, if you don't really know the city. Yes, Philly has a very high crime and murder rate, but most of those incidents  happen in areas that are troubled. I lived there for six years and never had anything bad happen to me. There are of course your usual crack heads and homeless people, but if you think Philly is bad, you haven't been to Seattle!

I'm not talking about tour notice and plans people.  I have my plans carefully laid, have for ages, financially ready and everything.  I do however like to know when I need to schedule ticket-buying time.

I don't have any negative feelings about my visit to Philly.  I have been there at least 5x and enjoy the city very much. I was just surprised at how much things have changed since my last visit.  I definately felt a negative vibe where in the past that was never the case, and my family's street smarts definately avoided any real trouble. (I won't bother with details in this forum for fear of getting off topic too much.) Anyway, I didn't mean for my little "heads up" to the person who was visiting Philly for the first time to turn into a political debate. :o  I certainly don't want to discourage anyone from going to the REM show there, and no offense was meant to anyone from Philly.

BTW, when the hell are those presale tickets going on sale?  :p

Yeah, what's up with the Fan Club? Seems the Euro sale was pretty quick turn-around. Is this an attempt to stem scalping? Knowing just SOMETHING about it would be nice. I keep getting paranoid my membership has lapsed but nope, still active and paid up. Come on, guys!
