Remember that girl, I can't be sure, but I think her name was Emily. She faked her own death on murmurs for attention. This was years ago. People even sent flowers and money to her family.

Anyone remember this?

good times

she was a nice girl, a bit nuts

Geez. I remember Emily, way back in 2000. I remember her telling everyone she was terminally ill. I felt so bad for her. I was away from Murmurs for awhile when I heard she'd died. I had no idea it was all fake! That's awful! How was her masquerade uncovered?

iirc, a respected user got suspicious because she received an e-mail from her address after her alleged death and looked into it. also, there had been some weird stuff going with her in real life, people who met her and stuff, so the whole thing seemed somewhat iffy anyway.

Good times?

She harmed several murmusians with her behaviour, I don't see how that makes good times.

Nothing "nice" about fakers, esp people who fake things like death and cancer.  They can fucking rot in hell for all I care.  I remember that incident.  I don't remember you though - what username did you have back then?

jeez, i never knew that! she fucked people around in real life, too, and put round libellous rumours about some. i started growing suspicious about her pretty early on, and found a lot of these suspicions confirmed when talking to someone who had been to meet her in real life later.

I thought this, I don't think it happening since I registered, though I heard about it.  Mind you, in my time there has been at least one person good at telling fairy tales.  It was so entertaining, I had to go see for myself.

Does murmurs have any hardcore fantasists at the moment?

There's a community on Livejournal dedicated to outing people who fake their deaths - it's not that uncommon.  There's a discussion in there now about a girl who is faking having cancer. There's two other communities dedicated to outing people who fake other aspects of their lives.

I had an experience last year where a desk clerk who was online lying and claiming to be a nurse used my own experiences to flesh out her lies. She actually at one point lied about having cancer in an effort to get attention as well.

I just found an online forum for professional soldiers and special forces members.  They have an entire section titled "Hall Of Shame" dedicated to outing people who fake and lie about being special forces members. Some of the fakers do it remarkably out in public, like at conventions, etc.  Stealing other people's glory.

Huh.  "Gravityboots" I seem to recall was a username that wasn't really very involved in the community at all but often posted in the fights and discussions regarding the running of the community, controversies about hosts and stuff.  Kind of hypocritical.  I don't think I thought of that person as being much more than a shit-stirrer.  The profile of that username indicated 23 posts?

So what's your point in starting this thread?

It must be a different Gravityboots, I was very involved in the community and I never had a problem with a host that I can remember.

The point of this thread is to recollect about murmurs history. That was a part of murmurs history I recalled. Maybe by remembering what happened then, we can prevent it from ever happening again.

I hope this answered your questions and concerns.

It just shows that anyone can say what they like online and you have to decide whether you believe them or not.

I could say something like...ATS depressed me so much that I turned to drugs. I could say my dog died last week because my gambling addiction has resulted in me having no money to buy bread, let alone dog food. I could say I met Michael Stipe once and shook his hand. I could say I wrote a song 5 years ago called 'Living Well Is The Best Revenge' and it sounds exactly like the REM song of the same name and that I'm sueing the band. I could say I actually killed myself a year ago and this is being typed by a ghost (also, as a ghost, I inspired Michael Stipe when he was attending a seance by whispering in a ghostly fashion 'you don't have to explain humiliation of your teenage station')

One of those is true. Or is it? Or are all of them true?

btw, I took it as sarcasm. Pretty obvious to me.

Anyway, I met Emily in person in Athens in 2000, then outed her about 3 years later trying to pull the same shit again. Not a nice person ultimately in my opinion.

Thanks :)

I talked to her a few times on aim or what have you, she seemed very nice, but always a bit off to me, obviously she was. As terrible as what she did was, I felt some sympathy for her, she obviously suffered from either a. some kind of mental problem of b. insane insecurity (which is also a mental problem I suppose)

i would write more erotica and fanfics if i didn't feel so dirty about it.
as for fake deaths, they seem to have always been trendy among interwebz teenies.
