I like it! I don't like the font for "REM" but otherwise I think it's actually pretty cool

It's weird how people, when staring at the same picture, see so many different things. To you it is gloomy and dark, but to me it just screams "loud, and in your face." Your interpretation is definitely not wrong, I'm just commenting on the nature of perception I suppose. :)

It reminds me very much of some sort of super-hero serial... the most recent example, in the same vein, that comes to mind is the movie "Sky Captain." It also has that "faded" look that a good number of REM albums have had.

I love it, even the R.E.M. part.

"Of course you liked early R.E.M. best," I want to say. "You were 17 years old and drunk on tequila and in love with a girl who didn't know you existed, and 'Harborcoat' summed up your melancholy mood like it was written just for you."

Just a cover...no feeling one way or the other really.  Still can't get my head around how people can say that the cover reflects the music within....Is that what the cover of an album is supposed to do?

I agree with you there, however I do believe an album cover can become intrinsically linked with the music it contains. I guess not as much these days for me personally, but I remember back when Automatic came out and i would sit with the cd booklet and listen to the record. When I listen now I can see the star on the cover and it is subconciously linked.

I really like the new cover.  The font is great, in my opinion, and it is a bit industrial.  Dark and somber it may be, but it probably goes with the general theme of the album, no one ever said dark and somber songs have to be slow.....Plus, considering the snippets of sound i've heard from ninety nights lately, it seems that dark and brooding is a layer on the album  that should be expected in at least a few of the songs.  I also enjoy how accelerate is written......all tense, vibrating sorta, etc.......the art dept. gets 5 stars for this one.

I love it...it reminds me of Dada collage. I don't know why, but it has that feeling to it.

It's not just because it's black and white that it's good. It's different and artsy with that collage feel to it (Dada and Cubism used that technique) which is cool.

Not always...mabe not even often...but sometimes I think it *can* be somewhat of a reflection. Automatic with it's greyscale cover kinda gives a feel of a mellow rainy day type thing...I dunno...but it kinda fits. Same with NAIHF.

This cover just looks like a cover of a more aggressive record...I hope that holds true...

oh, I *heart* hand-drawn typography!

..if someone comes on here and tells me there's some computer program that gives computer generated fonts a hand-drawn feel, like the programs that add some stylus-like 'crackle and pop' to mp3s, I'm gonna scream.  so please...leave me in ignorance.

Once again, that song is horrible.  Just horrible.  It makes me long for Animal.

I think you've hit the nail on the head for me - I so don't like super-hero stuff and I loathed the whole feeling of Sky Captain.  Oh well, I'm not one to judge a book by it's cover (usually)

Yes, the album cover and the album music are linked, from release to forever, for R.E.M.-catalog-library-discography sake.  If you really wanted to assure that all their covers showed the music within, all their covers would be made of ultra-transparent plastic (made from 100% post-consumer material).
