A new story entry has been added:

[drupal=1945]Rare R.E.M. Video Screening in Athens[/drupal]

Quote

On Sunday, October 21, 2007, the Athens Historical Society will present “R.E.M. in Perspective: An Athens History.”  The event will be held at 2:00 p.m. in the historic Seney-Stovall Chapel at 201 N. Milledge Avenue in Athens, Georgia.
The program will feature two previously unscreened vintage videos of R.E.M. and two panel discussions.
The featured videos include an R.E.M. practice session recorded at Wuxtry Records in Atlanta prior to the release of their first record, and an early performance at the 688 Club in Atlanta.

Good to see this video emergin to a wider scene. The audio of the rehearsal session has of course been wiedely circulated for many years, albeit initially being mislabelled for quite some time. Hopefully this means the video will also make its way to wider trading scene. (And no, youtube publication of the video would be immensly boring.)

That sounds great.  The cool thing about it is the opportunity for a whole bunch of people to meet up, in what sounds like an interesting venue, and enjoy a sense of community along with some great music.

Very Interesting!

Great!

Don't think we can make it though... :(

We'd love to be there, hope the films will reach a wider audience soon after this screening!
The discussion can be quite interesting too.

I would just note that I've talked to Dan Wall (of Wuxtry Records - the guy who has these videos) previously about getting a copy of the videos and/or watching them (even going so far to ask if I could bring a TV and vcr up to Wuxtry just to get a peek).  He was not interested.  My guess is that these videos aren't going to become available anytime soon.

When I lived in Athens for school, there was a screening going on of a documentary of the Athens music scene.  My wife worked for a lawyer who later ran for mayor, and he told her to order him two tickets.  We found out the next day that R.E.M. had played a show after the screening.  Neither one of us really frequented downtown once we started dating, but we were both PISSED to miss this show.

I wonder if the band will show up for this screening since they've been around town a little bit lately.

I am really thinking of going to this and was curious if any other R.E.M. fans would be going. Would love to meet up the night before.

I am giving myself the weekend to decide.

This sounds amazing, for those who can attend. No way I can go to Athens to watch a movie, but hopefully one of these days it will reach other people, too.

wow!!   I would almost kill to see these videos. I lived in Athens from 79-81 and saw REM countless times. Best musical memories I have are the Tyrone's shows. Good to know these videos exist.

From this week's Flagpole:
http://flagpole.com/Music/Threats

On Sunday, Oct. 21, a very cool event for R.E.M. fans, history buffs and Athens boosters takes place at the Seney-Stovall Chapel at 2 p.m. The event, "R.E.M. in Perspective: An Athens History" is sponsored by the Athens Historical Society. Attendees will be treated to viewing of exceedingly rare R.E.M. footage from an early show at Atlanta's 688 Club and a practice session filmed in the back of the Decatur branch of Wuxtry Records. This stuff has been under lock and key for about 25 years and, until now, there's probably only been 10 sets of eyes that have been given the privilege of seeing it. There will also be a lecture and two panel discussions at the event. Author Tony Fletcher (Remarks Remade: The Story of R.E.M.) will speak about Athens' place in R.E.M.'s history, followed by a panel featuring filmmaker Jim Herbert, Wuxtry Records owner Dan Wall and producer John Keane, among others. A second panel with former mayor Gwen O'Looney, activist Tim Johnson and historical preservation advocate Smith Wilson will discuss "R.E.M.'s social, civic, political, economic and preservation impact on Athens and beyond." For more information please contact Blair Dorminey at 706-254-7787 or via email at bdorminey@visalawcenter.com.
"We were listening to the UNC radio (station) there and they were playing an R.E.M. song. I like R.E.M. fine, but at the end of it, the DJ says, 'Ya that was R.E.M., the sound of the new South'. I looked at my roommate and we said, Gawd, if that's the sound of the new South, I preferred it when it was on the skids. That's how we got the name."
- Rick Miller of Southern Culture on the Skids

This was one of the most amazing events that I have ever attended.

I wanted to provide a link here for those that might be interested.

I am going to be posting a full essay on my "Vacation in Athens" on my site at some point in the very near future.

Thanks so much for the link.  Looking forward to reading your essay.  Just one quick question - were any of the band members in attendance?

None of the band members were in attendance. As what was stated during the program, the band were probably boarding a plane during the show to finish up recording on the new album.

Bertis was there for part of the program.

i'd love to have been in athens on sunday.  i visited the town once with my family and though we only spent a couple of days there, it made a lasting impression on me.

if the athens historical society does release a dvd of the event, it'd be wonderful.

i'm really looking forward to reading your account of the evening, eric.

I think it's a great idea to release this as a DVD, and hopefully some of the live footage will also be included. :D

Just sent them an email.
