A new audio entry has been added:

[drupal=1892]REM & Natalie Merchant - Photograph by R.E.M.[/drupal]

Quote

Photograph was co-written by Natalie Merchant and R.E.M. Michael had done the lyrics, with Natalie finishing them. The song was written for Automatic for the People and was released on the "Born to Choose" benefit record.

Great song! I can't believe I've never heard this before...

I'd say it lies much much further towards the 10,000 Maniacs part of the spectrum than the REM side, both musically and lyrically.

Do you know who the musicians were?

I'm pretty sure it's just R.E.M. and Natalie.
"We were listening to the UNC radio (station) there and they were playing an R.E.M. song. I like R.E.M. fine, but at the end of it, the DJ says, 'Ya that was R.E.M., the sound of the new South'. I looked at my roommate and we said, Gawd, if that's the sound of the new South, I preferred it when it was on the skids. That's how we got the name."

Yeah, the song has a very linear narrative structure, which is much more Natalie than Michael, but the music is very, very AFTP era R.E.M., so I think it works really well.

And its a powerful song lyrically too, about the power of photography and the still image and memory.

Brilliant song, possibly just pips "Your Ghost" as the best collaboration.

decent enough song, but would have been the weakest track on automatic. good thing it was left off, but i'm happy it was still released. i like the new feature, ethan. keep the rarities coming!

Was it ever under consideration to be included on Automatic?

No, was written during AFTP sessions but lyrics weren't completed.

I'm pretty sure I have a different, slower version of it..
One for sorrow, Two for joy, Three for a girl, Four for a boy, Five for silver, Six for gold, Seven for a secret never to be told, Eight's a kiss, Nine's a wish,
And Ten is an evening ending in bliss.

Great song, I had a friend turn me on to this a couple years back. Ethan spells out what I love so much about it, the lyrics. Granted I enjoy the music but the story it tells is what grabbed me.
