Any chance of getting it through another source besides torrents for those of less tech savy.....

Sure...just send my a PM with your address and I'll send a copy.

I'm listening now and this is a MUST HAVE for any REM fan. I can't remember being this excited for a long time

Initial impressions:

Living well's the best revenge...I love the guitar melody. Kickass song. Do hope Michael sings a bit more than chants.

Mr. Richards.....Monster style guitar. Sounds like a combo of Up and Monster....as strange as that is to say. Lyrically could fit on up. I think this is the longest of the new songs....clocking in at around 4:00.

The try not to breathe sound-alike appears to be completely unfinished....no distinguishing features whatsoever

On the fly sounds like ATS

Man sized wreath is one of my favorites....hope Michael is wrong that it wont make the album

Until the day is done sounds like it could fit on AFTP....also reminds me of Final Straw

More thoughts:

Staring down the barrel......Fast, lots of drums. Not very catchy on first listen, but much better the second time around. Promising.

Everybody here comes from somewhere (disguise?)...Nice upbeat rock sock, like the melody...Can't make out most of the lyrics though so the verdict is still out. Has potential.

Accelerate...My early favorite. Great chorus, very dark and moody. Reminds me of walk unafraid for some reason.

Horse to water....This will be the most popular of the new songs because it sounds mainstream. A minute too short, though. Reminds me of circus envy. Could fit on Monster.

I'm gonna DJ....Unfortunately not much improved. The melody isn't bad...the vocals are. Far too much shouting.

Is it just me or are these new songs all really short? Most are around 3 minutes and a couple are around 2 minutes in length. I don't think REM has made songs this short since Murmur.

The only downer that I have found about these songs, may also be the reason they are so short.

There are almost no bridges or guitar solos or interludes... yet...I know these ARE works in progress. Buuuuut there has been less and less of this on recent albums. EX: After the second chorus of "Living Well's the Best Revenge"...I'm jus BEGGIN Peter to go off on a solo, even if for 20 seconds. It'd bring soooo much more to the song. It's just verse/chorus/verse/chorus/verse/chorus/end

Imagine Driver 8 without the bridge. Fall On Me without the Mills vocal bridge? Kenneth without the backwards solo? Orange Crush without the interlude?

This new stuff sounds like the most fun and energetic stuff we've heard from this band in a long, long time. A few bridges or guitar solos could really take this thing to the next level.

I completely agree. Living well's the best revenge is the prime example and would be absolutely perfect for a guitar solo...as would Man sized wreath (throw it on the fire).

One of the songs is 1:40 with no distinguishable chorus, bridge or solo. I think some of these are very much works in progress.

I'm not sure about everyone else but I honestly wasn't expecting much in the way of quality with the videos especially since I believe they were shot using a camera phone.
"We were listening to the UNC radio (station) there and they were playing an R.E.M. song. I like R.E.M. fine, but at the end of it, the DJ says, 'Ya that was R.E.M., the sound of the new South'. I looked at my roommate and we said, Gawd, if that's the sound of the new South, I preferred it when it was on the skids. That's how we got the name."

Oh yeah, I'm grateful that someone did take them using their phone, because it meant that they could get them up to us sooner.  I'm also glad that someone took the time to record and edit the show, which takes a bit longer -- and its up on the tracker surprisingly fast.

Considering how album "leaks" are handled by most artists/record companies these days I'm also surprised we're hearing any of this at all.

I just grabbed this torrent off of the Murmurs tracker, but the info file that came with it didn't have all the song names.   So I went ahead and put a complete set list together that has the correct (tentative) track names.  Enjoy:

Dublin, Olympia Theater, 6/30/07

1. Living Well
2. Staring Down the Barrel of the Middle Distance
3. Second Guessing
4. Mr. Richards
5. Houston
6. 1,000,000
7. On the Fly
8. Letter Never Sent
9. Man Sized Wreath
10. Little America
11.  Until the Day is Done
12. Maps and Legends
13. Disguised
14. Accelerate
15. Horse to Water

Encore:

16. These Days
17. New Test Leper
18. Electrolite
19. I'm Gonna DJ

just downloaded it...it sounds great! now i don't mind if they take their time in the studio and make the songs better by adding a bridge or something to beef up the song, cuz i could listen to these all day

i love how they've made detectives out of us all, trying to match song titles on the back of those t-shirts with the songs (although in many cases it's easy cause the name is repeated in the song, but still)
