One needs to register, so what is this site about?

One of my old classmates from high school just emailed me on it. It seems like fun.

It's a networking site. Lots of people are connecting with classmates from college or high school on it. It started to be big amongst college students, and it's now growing. YOu have a profile, and join interest groups. I think you can leave comments in the "groups". You can also email members, etc.

Thanks for explaining, pebbles. :)

Thank you Ethan...something else to spend time I haven't got on :p
I've only been on it for a couple of nights, but I could easily spend hours there, not sure what all the bells and whistles do, but finding groups is completely absorbing.

Watch out, people. If you want some semblance of a life, ever, then do not join facebook. IT TAKES OVER. seriously.

I just started mu job full time (37 hours from 25) this week.... I can use all the distraction I can get ....... I'm already 10 CD covers up on the deal -(I hope my boss doesn't read this- I work VERY hard REALLY!)
n.b. It's the SAME job - how can I stretch 25 hours into 37 without a little distraction?

Ok guys, I'm REALLY worried right now. I can't log in to my Facebook account and there are hackers from another site who have been harrassing me and hacking my accounts on several different sites and putting horrible obscene things on my profiles. I changed my Facebook password today and I was able to log in fine, but later when I came back I could not log in with that password and I hadn't changed it since then. I tried to reset my password several times and each time I did the log in would not accept the new password. I e-mailed the site and explained what was going on but have not recieved a reply yet. If any of you who are my Facebook friends could check on my page to make sure that there is nothing nasty on my profile I would really appreciate it! I am so tired of these creeps, they seriously have no lives. =(

I heard on the radio today how prospective employers scan the social networking sites--such as Facebook, Youtube and others--for things that applicants have posted...and displayed...about themselves.
According to the report, prospective employers reject some huge percentage of applicants because of provocative, slutty, nasty (however fun!) things they have found on these types of Web sites.
Have fun, but be careful! You never know what might come to haunt you from the past.

Rebecca - that is a pain, are you back on there yet?
Tuatara - what a scare monger you are. Bearing in mind this is an international sitem, which country is actually doing this?

Yes, thankfully I am back on because an administrator changed my password for me. =) I was really worried there for a while though, our teacher had just been telling us about how employers check sites like Facebook... If anything else happens don't be surprised if I delete mine. I don't want some sickos ruining my reputation. :(

Good advice in general for life online, really. :)
FYI: You can adjust who can see your profile information on most social networking sites (Myspace, Facebook, Friendster, etc.), and you can make them private (so just your friends/contacts can see them) if you choose. So then, while a prospective employer might be able to see if you're on one of those sites, they wouldn't be able to look at your profile information in much of any detail--they might see a name, and a header photo, but that'd be about it.
