Maybe this has already been addressed as I haven't read the entire thread.

There are American urban legends circulating about boys named Shithead (pronounced Shi-theed) or the Orangejello and Lemonjello twins.  If there were really as many of either as people say there are, every classroom would have 2 or 3 of them.

I recently heard about a child named Ozzy.  Not John Michael - Mr. Osbourne's given name too - but OZZY.

I am not aware of any and I have seen lots of ones you would have questioned at least the sanity of the parents if not the legalality of the  names.  :p

The only restriction I'm aware of is that you can't put numbers in them.  I did hear about a woman who called herself "Sha4ron", pronounced "Sharon", but it goes without saying that she was a performance artist.

if that right to discretion the civil service has prevents parents from naming their kids goering or hitlerina i'm all for it. i think it's less a matter of legislation than a matter of common sense.

My local newspaper prints the names of babies born at one hospital in the region, and there have been two babies born recently whose parents named them Aryan.

I'm guessing it was pronounced A-Ryan but can't assume this.  I did once hear about a woman named Vagina (I kid you not!) and a male friend of mine once dated a woman named Melena, which is the medical term for stools turned black by gastrointestinal bleeding.  Melena later went to nursing school so no doubt she found out.........that.

I still think someone's pulling your leg, Astrid!  Let's ask Sheila - she's about as Scottish as they come!

Oops, sorry, I just spotted this.

I'm sad to say adding -ina on to the end of a name is a Scottish thing, and particularily in the North-East, but fortunately seems to be dying out.

During my hospital-working names we saw some treasures amongst the old folk--Williamina and Georgina are very common, then there's Robertina, Edwardina, Roderickina etc. I'm not sure if I've met a Hughina though, although I'm sure there's some out there somewhere!

A friend of mine swears her sister delivered a baby in Dublin called Pocahontas O'Reilly

oh dear...

two northside girls meet on a bus. "jayzis sheila", says the first one, "sure i haven't seen you forever. are you pregnant?" "yeah..." "so who's the father?" "ah sure that's like asking which bean made the fart!" must have been her baby...

roderickina might actually be marginally more disturbing than hughina. (though it mercifully does not conjure upo mental images of lethally gorgeous actors in drag)

Lady I once worked with heard a young mother talking to her small daughter on the bus. The little girl was called Posh! Wonder what her mother's favourite girl band was called then!?

I lurk and occasionally post on a nursing board even though I'm not a nurse myself, and the OB pages are always colorful and interesting.

One thread was something like "Top Ten Rules For Patients in OB" and one of them was along the lines of "If you do not know how to spell the name you want to give your baby, we will issue the baby a name like Susan, Mary, Charles, or George."

Another rule was "If you wish to give your boyfriend oral pleasure in the recovery room, that's fine, we really don't care, but PLEASE shut the door first."  Maybe it's just me, but I couldn't think of anything I would not want to be on either end of shortly after childbirth than oral sex!

omfg! so was the poor little tyke clad in burberry check from head to toe then? you see, it might to be rationally justifiable that germany is stricter on such things, but at least it occasionally prevents such disasters from happening. ;) on the otehr hand, of course, i remember being in the chiemgau region in bavaria one time, where people do speak a rather scary sort of dialect, and happening upon a little girl with the name of salome. said with her mom's bavarian accent it was actually slightly worse than posh or chardonnay.

sarah - makes you wonder what kind of patients these nurses get...

My dad was a doctor in a rural area of GA. I used to work in the office in the summers helping with filing and such, you should see some of the names that were in those files.
I have an incredibly boring name, nothing wrong with it  is just very acceptable.  I kind of like the idea of people coming up with there own names and the government staying out of it.

in principle i like the idea too, but unfortunately it assumes an awful lot of common sense in the parents which doesn't always seem to be there...

Not my first choice for a name, but I guess it's better than Jack off Jill.

Too right. As a Housing Benefits officer, you do see some terrible examples on application forms of names parents have given their kids. They probably think the names they give their little ones are cute. I wonder what they would think if they knew that my colleagues and myself all have a jolly good laugh at their expense.
