Never seen the show, but the melodrama of the commercials is enough for me.  ...next time on House...Dr. Fuckwad goes too far... Dumb.

Okay, maybe the show's premises are often a bit ridiculous,  but dang it, you don't have to barge in here and stomp on our drool, Fancy-pants.

Unless. . . .

Could it be?    ?     ?

yeah, i've heard jim dale reads it quite well. i can't imagine any other voice doing it, though. stephen fry has this benevolent, avuncular thing going on and his accent lifts the whole thing to quite a different plain. the idea of any of his characters driving a pick up is one i very much hope to see ridiculed by rich hall on the next season of qi...

lucy - off course corpy is jealous! come, let's all point at him and chant! :p
corpy is jealous, corpy is jealous!

btw - is stephen fry worship allowed here? i'm sure our object of desire would be quite put out if it wasn't.

Awww... poor Corpy and his jealousy :(  I think we should feel sorry for him - very few men can measure up to our beloved blue eyes and I'd hate to see a fragile male psyche damaged in the effort.

And of course Stephen Fry worship is allowed. It would be very wrong to separate the best of friends. Also on Bones, he's having the main male character build him a new brick barbecue, tries to make coffee instead of tea (as the main character says he doesn't like tea) and the coffee is awful. He does a very good job of playing the psychiatrist role, works good, relevant, yet probing questions in between catching the character off guard with his Britishisms and quirkiness. Do you get the show over there? It's not something I watch all the time but I watch on occasion and it's okay - watched especially tonight to see our beloved's best friend :)

Come Monday, it'll be all right...

uhu, there is not the slightest doubt that corpy is now utterly traumatised and will turn into a bitter, antisocial, sarcastic old bastard. just as long as he doesn't hurt his leg, hoho. "everybody lies" is actually a great catchphrase for an attorney, don't you think? :p

re stephen fry - yes, that's what i was thinking. i get bones, yep, but i only watch it occasionally. that's an episode i'll definitely check out, though. dang, i want hugh laurie back on qi! there's something of a campaign going on on the qi messageboard to get him back, but i fear it ain't gonna happen. such a shame, he was gorgeous - being quite tense and nervous, and as we all know he looks best with a troubled expression - and very funny too. and while we're at shared fry and laurie ventures, here is what might actually be the oldest pic featuring hugh laurie on the net - undergrads stephen (english) and hugh (anthropology) enjoying a game of chess together (just in case there was still any doubt they are indeed both of very superior brainpower):

Ah yes, that is a very good catchphrase for an attorney - isn't there some sort of lawyer oath, like doctors have to swear to "first do no harm"? I think lawyers have to swear that they buy into the fact that "everybody lies" :p

I'm still wishing we got QI over here, however I've been able to see quite a few episodes on Youtube :) Perhaps Hugh will make a guest appearance or two when House is on break - we can always hope!

i doubt that, unfortunately. for all i can see on the spot wit is somewhat outside his comfort zone, and the word on the qi board is that he went on the panel in the first ever episode as a favour but didn't really enjoy it much. if he's ever gonna do it again i'm pretty sure it's certainly not going to happen before the return visit, which is of course not going to happen until at least season 4.

That's too bad it was outside his comfort zone but I can understand him not wanting to feel too put on the spot - especially from what I've read about him. That interview with him you posted in another thread really said a lot about his personality and I enjoyed reading it, yet at the same time, some of it was painful to read as it struck really close to home.

But on a happier note, here's another lovely picture!  **swoon**

now that one's cute! :D he's such a sweetie when he just looks happy, issn't he? huge reason why stephen fry should get married (or civil unioned or whatever it's called) actually, being able to enjoy the sight of the best man grinning like a big, happy loon. ;)

re that article - if the page i found it on didn't keep freezing on me i'd post a link to it here. i found it on http://www.hughlaurie.co.uk as far as i remember, do you want to make an attempt to find the deep link? that one did cut vey close to the bone...

It took me a while but I found it on that site, got distracted reading so many of the other articles. It's the Guardian article "Going Straight" if anyone else wants to read it. The article gives quite a bit of insight into why Hugh Laurie is the way he is. Not that I would assume to know him from solely reading an article, but it was, nonetheless, quite interesting.

Goodness, I could just see him at Stephen Fry's wedding :D  How adorable would that be? Hugh's smile is all the more precious because it's not seen too often and isn't a gratuitous smile, not a fake "for the camera" smile.

it's a very distracting site, isn't it? i like the way they've incorporated his own words with the audio files. while usually not hugely into posh accents (or what is still called received pronounciation in some circles) i could listen to his for hours, presumably because he has enough warmth in his voice to carry it off; it doesn't reek of snobbery with him. messrs. fry and cohen should so tie the knot. i mean, what about pension entitlements and inheritance and all that? (what an effort in hypocrisy just for one little grin. oh dear oh dear oh dear) y'know, i can't get enough of his smile. if house had just once smiled at tritter the entire addiction story arc would never have happened. ;)

Hugh Laurie could read the phone book and I'd set and listen to it :)

And yeah, I'm not exactly a champion of the institution of marriage (and generally try to avoid weddings but all my friends seem to have relatively large weddings, some of them have had several, and I always get wrangled into participating - typically in a hideous dress with a bow on my arse, but I digress), but to see Hugh standing up at the wedding of Mr. Fry and Mr. Cohen would be a nice thing to see. I bet there would be quite the reception / after party :D

You know that Tritter would have just given up the whole push for prosecution and jail time if he'd just gotten a big genuine smile combined with that sideways head tilt that says "this is who I am, problems and all - don't you just LOVE me??"

And now I'm off to bed - got a long day tomorrow complete with two classes to teach and a couple of meetings.

Come Monday, it'll be all right...

I feel a song coming on...

Mystery
All my life has been a mystery
You and I were never ever meant to be
That's why I call my love for you a mystery

Different country
You and I have always lived in a different country
And I know that airline tickets don't grow on a tree
So what kept us apart is plain for me to see
That much at least is not really a mystery

Estuary
I live in a houseboat on an estuary
Which is handy for my work with the Thames Water Authority
But I know you would have found it insanitary
Insanitary

Taken a violent dislike to me
I'd be foolish to ignore the possibility
That if we'd ever actually met, you might have hated me
Still, thats not the only problem that I can see

Dead since 1973
You've been dead now . . . wait a minute, let me see
Fifteen years come next January (Ja-NUary)
As a human being you are history

So why do why I still long for you?
Why is my love so strong for you?
Why did I write this song for you?
Well, I guess it's just a mystery

Mystery...

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear- Hugh Laurie really is awfully distracting isn't he?

I offer a rather amusing You Tube tid-bit. Because, really, how can you go wrong pairing Hugh with Spamalot.

no one knows what it's like
to be the bad man
to be the sad man
behind blue eyes

no one knows what it's like
to be hated
to be fated
to telling only lies

but my dreams they aren't as empty
as my conscience seems to be
i have hours only lonely
my love is vengance
that's never free

no one knows what it's like
to feel these feelings
like i do
and i blame you

no one bites back as hard
on their anger
none of my pain and woe
can show through

but my dreams they aren't as empty
as my conscience seems to be
i have hours only lonely
my love is vengance
that's never free

when my fist clenches crack it open
before i use it and lose my cool
when i smile just tell me some bad news
before i laugh and act like a fool
and when i swallow anything evil
put your finger down my throat
when i shiver give me a blanket
keep me warm, let me wear your coat

no one knows what it's like
to be the bad man
to be the sad man
behind blue eyes

i can't help thinking of that song when i see that smile, love it far too much for my own good, ever since if first heard it when i was 12 or so. it's sort of weird to think that when pete townshend wrote it hugh laurie was a mere nipper and no one could have ever even conceived of a character like house making it into a mainstream tv series. now youtube is full of montages connecting the two (sadly quite often using the limp bizkit version which should simply be outlawed).

whoa, i think that makes you the record holder or something! :D 1992 here, in germany we didn't get any hugh before that. it was peter's friends that did it for me. y'know, one of the nice things about house is that you can suddenly go round proclaiming your love for him without being met by incomprehending stares accompanied by the words "hugh who?" alright, so my dad still refers to him as george, but then my dad also refers to brazil as "that thing with robert de niro cardinal fang has done". suddenly it's cool to be into hugh laurie, it gives you some sort of grasp what it must have felt like for gays when homosexuality became legal. ;)

must be the scottish thing. i mean, no red-blooded glaswegian would like to be seen NOT expressing antipathy to an eton educated chinless wonder with the kind of accent english teachers try to impose on their poor, innocent charges, right? it's a sentiment i'd usually share, but with this particular eton educated chinless wonder... hm... it's just different! *melts into puddle once again*

hm yes, a slight pang of jealousy regarding joely richardson there is almost unavoidable, no? ;) re the song, i keep wondering if the baba o'riley scene was a subtle reference, after all behind blue eyes is on the same album (which i'll listen to and as ever enjoy immensely in the car today methinks). something tells me that as when he put the ipod back on with the wrong song as vogler was walking out he had meant to play that...
