Sweet tea is vile.

The only thing vile about iced tea is when it's not sweetened, or not sweetened properly.

I've also heard southerners say ch'all instead of y'all instead of you. Confirm?

It depends on what comes before "y'all".  If it's a hard consonant like the "t" in "what", then the "y'all" sounds like "ch'all" as in "what ch'all doin?"

I'm not Mary but I once had a co-worker from Rhode Island who refered to the water cooler as a "bubbler".

If by water cooler you mean drinking fountain, then yes, that's a bubbler. But if not, then it's not the same thing.

Certain areas of Wisconsin refer to drinking fountains as bubblers. Most people I know who say it are from along the Lake Michigan lakeshore. But no one I know knows why they say it. One from outside Green Bay thought it was a specific brand from Kohler. One from Milwaukee disagreed. Someone else told me it was because the water bubbled up from the middle of the drinking fountain.

Whatever it is, every time someone would say it I would almost pee my pants from laughing.

This doesn't surprise me. When I travel overseas, people ask me where I'm from, and they usually have a great deal of difficulty. Some can narrow it down to "North American".

I think my accent is a bit complex. Years ago I had direct contact with lots of customers from around the world, and I found voice changing a bit to adjust a bit to the customer's accent. I didn't realize I was doing that until co-workers noticed it while I was on the phone.

I also had a co-worker who spoke very abrupt halting English with a Japanese accent. Sure enough, while talking to that person, I would start to talk with her in a similar voice. I look back at it with humor: "What heck do you doing, Nochan?"

It's also notable that Ohio has had a major impact on how Californians speak. Apparently some early migration patterns stemmed from Ohio to California. However, our dear guv'nah calls it "kah-lee-forn-yah".

Yeah, that is what I call a water cooler and a drinking fountain. But a bubbler (in some areas of Wisconsin) is a drinking fountain.

But, Mary, do you say "bubbler" or "stop-and-go light"?

Oh god, no--those never made it this far north, thank goodness.  ;)  I don't think my relatives in Peshtigo (just north of Green Bay) use it, either, come to think of it, so it must run out fairly far to the south of here.  I remember going to state band/forensics meets down in the southeastern part of WI in high school (the first times I'd ever been that far "south"), and laughing at the southerners using "bubbler."  That "bubbler" stuff seems to be pretty localized, which is kind of funny...I do wonder how that got started.

(Meanwhile, while we were laughing at "bubbler," they were probably laughing at us for our "da" and "ya" usage.  :p)

I suppose every place has its unique linguistic twists, but I think this particular slice of WI has retained a stronger "Minnesota/Fargo/Yooper" accent just due to it being so damn isolated.  And geographically, we're a lot closer to northern Minnesota and the U.P. than we are the "big cities" in WI--so maybe the "old country" accents haven't had as much changing influence as they have elsewhere.

There was a thing on WI Public Television last year about a professor from Madison doing a linguistics study of the state, and I'll never forget this part--he said he was making a special effort to go "up north" to record samples of speech patterns.  And the host asked him, "Oh, where are you headed?" and the professor responded, "Eau Claire."

Dude--Eau Claire is three hours south of here.  He wasn't even hitting the tip of the iceberg!  ;)

What American accent do you have? Your Result: The Inland North

You may think you speak "Standard English straight out of the dictionary" but when you step away from the Great Lakes you get asked annoying questions like "Are you from Wisconsin?" or "Are you from Chicago?"  Chances are you call carbonated drinks "pop."

What American accent do you have?

funny.. i have never been in any part of the United States yet. How come I speak like this? my english teach who tried to teach me oxford english would not be amused :p

This is the answer I got also. Sad thing is I am from the Great Lakes area, and it is called 'pop' I went back through and made one minor difference and then it went to the "you have no accent" answer so I wouldn't worry too much. Nobody has ever asked me if I was from Wisconsin or Chicago.

That seemed kind of unnecessary.

I disagree with yours, but there is no option for 'Texas' accent.  You have a prototypical Texas accent.

[QUOTE][QUOTE]What American accent do you have?
Your Result: The Northeast

Judging by how you talk you are probably from north Jersey, New York City, Connecticut or Rhode Island. Chances are, if you are from New York City (and not those other places) people would probably be able to tell if they actually heard you speak.

That's not ugly!  What's wrong with a Texas accent?  I like your accent.  You have one.  It's obvious.  It's Texas.

Not really. I was first raised in New York (near the city), then moved to DE. My parents are from the DC area and from PA (though she moved a lot) and I also have a significant British influence.

Funny they should mention radio, though. My dad was a DJ in college and I just got an intern position at my local radio station with hopes of DJing in the summer.

He wasn't even hitting the tip of the iceberg!  ;)

The one friend I have who says bubbler is from De Pere, so maybe it never made it to the north side of GB. But she had some Yooper in her, too, since her dad was from the UP and she lived there for a couple of years. She even said "holy wah" from time to time (something else that made me giggle). She also has a really thick accent. Anyway, no one in Iola or Stevens Point ever used that I know of -- unless they had family on the Lakeshore. Stop-and-go light was something I heard almost exclusively in Iola, but I have a colleague whose in-laws live between Point and Wausau and they say it.

I worked with people from north of Iola. Now, Iola is a small isolated town, but these were even more isolated, and they had really thick, hard accents. Lots of "ya" and "ya hey dere". (Although I say "ya ya" fairly regularly.) Then again, I worked with someone from Two Rivers (aka Trivers) and his accent was wacked.

Ah, well, to someone in Madison, Portage is Up Nort'. To me, up nort' is anything north of Wausau.

Apparently I have a north-eastern accent as well, which is ridiculous because there is no way I sound anything like Ray....NO WAY!

South Australians have the most distinctive accents amongst Australians, and we get teased for it by the convict states.  We say our L sounds a bit differently, as well as out vowel sounds.  Most obviously is something like the name Grant..we say it more like Gr-ah-nt, and on the east coast people say it in a way that makes them sound like Americans to us.  Other words we get most teased about  are: castle, photograph, dance etc
