Well, when I see "bayg" I think of the southern thing -- making a one-sylable word into two -- bay-g. I don't do that. I'm just all nasally. Still, in my head, bag and vague are similar -- not exactly the same, but similar.

Dag = the nickname of a friend of mine.

When I first moved south I had a difficult time distiguising "a" from "o." Example -- I was supposed to look up a person whose last name was Hawley. But the way I heard it was "Howly" and I could not find him in the directly. I finally figured it out.

"Dag" is also slang like "dang". It was also the name of a very excellent NC band.
"We were listening to the UNC radio (station) there and they were playing an R.E.M. song. I like R.E.M. fine, but at the end of it, the DJ says, 'Ya that was R.E.M., the sound of the new South'. I looked at my roommate and we said, Gawd, if that's the sound of the new South, I preferred it when it was on the skids. That's how we got the name."

Okay, I had forgotten about 'mag'...could be because I haven't seen one in forever.

Everything keeps coming around to poo around here lately...sheep poo. Got it.

The maintenance guy for my last apartment told me to tell management to replace my fridge - he said "tell them Hurl said so".  Well, that's what I heard anyway, even after he repeated his name for me, so I wrote them an email telling them that "Hurl" said I should get a new fridge.  They wrote back telling me that they've got one for me and "Harold" should be around soon to install it.  There's no way I could have got "Harold" from the way he pronounced his name.

Have I brought up that in upstate New York people say "el-eh-men-TARRY" for grammar school?

It's elemenchry.  Come on.
Some kind of singing. They sound like all kinds of people, right? And then it says another child is born in India every time you call this number, right? Does that make any sense to you?
And the guy that spoke--I don't know who he is. But that--it doesn't sound like no answering machine, right?

Definite Sconny/Minnesota/Yooper accent hybrid around here.  (Although Fargo exaggerated it a bit, in parts, IMO.)  Fish fry Fridays at the bar have sometimes proven unintelliglble to outsiders, though.   :p

I am surprised I didn't have more North Central, but I am lacking the yooper part of the accent. The first week I lived in central Wisconsin I was at the post office. There was some old man talking to the postmaster and I could not understand a damn thing he was saying. I figured he was from the "old country." But the longer I was there I realized he had the backwoods Sconnie accent. And Fargo was about 500 times funnier when I lived Up Nort'.

But, Mary, do you say "bubbler" or "stop-and-go light"?

I once lost a job because I wouldn't accept a glass and it offended the guy.

I've also heard southerners say ch'all instead of y'all instead of you. Confirm?

And "billfols" instead of "billfolds" meaning wallet.

I don't know about the y'all v ch'all thing. I've never paid much attention to it. The fact that I even started saying "y'all" sends my friends and family into a laughing fit. I could definitely see billfols instead of billfods.

Yeah, dropping consonants is pretty common.  Never heard ch'all, though.

I'd never had sweet iced tea until I came to NC, but I gotta say, it's pretty refreshing when it's 95F and humid outside.
