"We were listening to the UNC radio (station) there and they were playing an R.E.M. song. I like R.E.M. fine, but at the end of it, the DJ says, 'Ya that was R.E.M., the sound of the new South'. I looked at my roommate and we said, Gawd, if that's the sound of the new South, I preferred it when it was on the skids. That's how we got the name."

Says I'm from the Northeast.  But who actually makes "bag" rhyme with "vague"?

What American accent do you have? Your Result: The Inland North

You may think you speak "Standard English straight out of the dictionary" but when you step away from the Great Lakes you get asked annoying questions like "Are you from Wisconsin?" or "Are you from Chicago?"  Chances are you call carbonated drinks "pop."

What American accent do you have?

My one coworker does and it annoys the crap out of me.  Bag rhymes with vague and plague.  She also says bagel to sound like beg-gel.

Mine:

"You have a Midland accent" is just another way of saying "you don't have an accent." You probably are from the Midland (Pennsylvania, southern Ohio, southern Indiana, southern Illinois, and Missouri) but then for all we know you could be from Florida or Charleston or one of those big southern cities like Atlanta or Dallas. You have a good voice for TV and radio.
Some kind of singing. They sound like all kinds of people, right? And then it says another child is born in India every time you call this number, right? Does that make any sense to you?
And the guy that spoke--I don't know who he is. But that--it doesn't sound like no answering machine, right?

Um, duh. Anyone who has ever heard me speak knows I am from/lived in Wisconsin. I grew up in Iowa, but ten years in Wisconsin ruined my speech forever. And as I discovered over the weekend, the more tired I am, the stronger my sconnie accent is.

And people in Wisconsin don't call it "pop." It's soda. People in Iowa call it pop.

My mom was born in Wisconsin and raised in Illinois, and she tends to just call the beverage what it says on the can.
Me too, I suppose.

On that note, I have been known to pronounce 'beverage' as 'beaver-age', but that's intentional. :D

Bag is with a nasally A. Vague pretty much sounds like that but with a V. Sometimes it is slightly different, but for the most part, it's the same.

Seriously, though, my accent is not as strong as it was when I moved down here. But when I go back up north, particularly to the Chicago area (or to Wisconsin, if I ever went back) it comes back really strong. Or if I am around others from the upper midwest I hear myself say things like "Oh, yah, dontcha know." Really. And, as I said, the more tired I am the less attention I pay to how I pronouce things and it comes roaring back. Friday night after being up almost 24 hours I was making plans with someone on the phone and I could hear my accent. If I can hear then I know it is strong.

I do.

How?  To me they're nothing alike - that was the only question I thought was really odd.  Bag rhymes with hag, dag, sag, etc which all have an "a" sound like dad.  But vague is said "vayg" (with a hard g).  Do you say "bayg", or "vag" (hard g) or something in between for both?

Edit: Sorry - a bit slow in posting the reply.  So you say "vag".  Weird.

Vague fits in with bag, flag, mag, sag, not the other way around.

So this poem would rhyme:

There once was a lonely old hag
who was only fit for a body bag
well she up and died
and no one cried
and everyone said it was the plague.
Some kind of singing. They sound like all kinds of people, right? And then it says another child is born in India every time you call this number, right? Does that make any sense to you?

Bag, hag, dag, etc., sound nothing like the A in dad. Not even close.

I can see the vayg sound of vague, but that is closer to the a in bag than the a in dad. I can't even make the Dad "a" when saying bag.

I think I am probably closer to somewhere between bayg and vag. It's a longer, nasally "a." Honestly, how I say bag changes. It depends on how fast I am talking and how much I am paying attention to how I am saying things. Sometimes I when I say 'bag" it is almost but not quite "beg" (which is more of a Chicago thing).

Let's see.... Donna, Kelly, Steve (Wingnut), and Jason have all heard me speak. (Others have but they aren't here anymore). They might be able to explain it better than me.

Sorry for the digression, but WTF 'words' are 'mag' and 'dag'?? Sentence?

Ray put my question to Biz into the perfect words I could not find, but then Froggy and Biz came back and screwed my head entirely. I've known some Northerners, but damn, I never heard someone say 'bayg' or 'vagg'. Guess maybe it's something I'll have to hear.

Mag is short for magazine used by morons, and dag is a different way of saying dang.

"Dag man, let's go buy that new Fall Out Boy Fancy mag."

No one I've ever heard says bayg...vayg is correct for vague, but some weirdos say it vag (not vaj, like vagina)

Mag is short for some things, like magazine, and where I come from, dags are the mess of dried droppings that hang off a sheep's arse.

I don't say "beg" for "bag" but the way I say some vowels can be confusing.  For example, the short "i" sound can sound more like a "u", as in the classic "fush and chups" that Aussies love making us Kiwis say (it's not quite that extreme though).  And "pen" can sound more like "pin", which is something I found people in North Carolina doing too (they thought I was picking up their accent).
