I agree with Andy, people constantly shitting on reveal and ATS is becoming very annoying to me... Up is (in my opinion) the best album in music history, and reveal & ATS are masterpieces!!! Actually Reveal is the only REM album where i don't hate any song. I used to hate beachball but i realized it's a quite good song.

It is all personal opinion.  If you don't like certain tracks or entire albums you are perfectly entitled to say so.  Why does anyone care what other people like or don't like?  I know that I don't lose any sleep or raise my blood pressure over it.

The comments made about people 'not being fans' because they haven't enjoyed certain albums is a load of tosh.  Please.

Quite. I sometimes wonder why people don't like songs I think are great, and vice versa (because everyone's different perhaps??), but it doesn't upset me.

Anyway, a fansite full of sycophantic dribbling would be too dull for words.

Posting complaints isn't enough. Lets ban everyone with a dissenting opinion, and while we're at it, can we enforce a compulsory R.E.M test on everyone new person. With such questions as "What is Michael Stipe's mobile number?" and "Mike Mills, sex object, yes?" we could truly have the R.E.M paradise that this troubled world so desperately needs. I should think AIDs would disappear overnight, and talking of AIDs, Michael Stipe’s taking his time with it isn’t he?

I must say that The Eagle song was the best thing ever.  Anyone who disagrees is obviously not a real fan and should be ashamed of themselves.  Further more they should wear hairshirts (because that was mentioned in an REM song you idiots) and maybe a celice for good measure.

It isn't AIDS you big silly! It is bird flu. That is why Mike penned the Eagle song, because  Michael got it from an eagle.

Keep up.

I agree with all of the comments about not idolizing R.E.M. and everything they do, etc.  There's quite a few of their songs I don't like.  Personally I think Hairshirt is one of the worst songs ever made, R.E.M. or otherwise.

My point is that if you are like coinaphrase and think "the last 2 albums should never have been made," or if you're going to spend the next month and a half complaining about the fanclub packagae you spent all of $10 for, then maybe you shouldn't call yourself a fan, and maybe you shouldn't join the fanclub.

Fans of a band most definitely shouldn't religiously worship everything a band does.  I know some people who if their favorite band played a C chord for two minutes straight and called it a song, they would think it was the best thing ever.  That's very, very annoying, and you're wrong to include me in that group.

But if you're going to constantly trash literally everything R.E.M. has done for the last 6 years or so, then you're not really a fan at all.  Just my 2 cents.

I think Germany's really cool, but I hate Hitler.  Does that mean I have to stop thinking Germany is cool?
Some kind of singing. They sound like all kinds of people, right? And then it says another child is born in India every time you call this number, right? Does that make any sense to you?
And the guy that spoke--I don't know who he is. But that--it doesn't sound like no answering machine, right?

If I brought a CD for $10 I'd be pretty pissed if it had the wrong band on it.

Oh Yes!

For what it's worth - I actually think Reveal (apart from the title which has always reminded me of slaughtered calves and is a personal problem) is a beautiful album.

I wish that Around The Sun had never been released as an LP but I have to say that live (and I saw the tour quite a few times:o ) it all came together wonderfully and even the most dreadful songs 'worked' live.

I've been watching live music now for onwards of 30 years and have seen REM more live than any other band (by far,far).... They are the absolute best live - particularly because Michael is so charismatic and magical and totally absorbing and gorgeous.

I hope to have the luxury of seeing the boys on stage again in my life.

but... I do think that the Christmas package is sacrosanct to old term fans and the rumour that this year may feature an unknown band at a time when even the most staunch fan is feeling deserted and disappointed is a mistake.

Oh and by the way- I challenge ANYONE to quote a post where ANYONE has dissed the FANCLUB and I will personally take that person out and kick their arse!

I KNOW that I've merged many threads and arguements here but I'm very tired and just wanted to post how I feel about all of what's going on and how I HATE it when I say that I'm a staunch REM fan and people say "Oh, I used to love them - are they still around?" - Do I want to spent the next 20 years in a secure mental institution?

Even by this board's standards that was a fairly awful use of the "Hitler example".

Unless Peter Buck hates gays and Jews of course

R.E.M. just hired Mel Gibson as their drummer.  I thought it was an apt metaphor.

Sounds like a good sign for a new heavier race hate album, isn't that what everyone here wants, lots of angry guitars and angrier screaming?
