Michael Stipe recently sat down with Uncut and dished a bit on the new record, Accelerate. The record, out April 1, was recorded in just three sessions between Vancouver, Dublin and Athens, GA. It was mixed in London. The total recording time came to 9 weeks, which is the fastest recording of an R.E.M. record in nearly two decades.
Says Michael:
I really liked the songs on the last album [2004’s Around the Sun], but none of us were happy with the way the record came out. All of us loved the material, but we watched it kind of disappear over the course of the recording. I want to stress that it was no fault of the producer – Pat McCarthy – it was really about myself, Mike and Peter being unable to sit together and talk about the music and what we wanted it to be. And that turned into a record of potentially great songs that just didn’t reach their potential.
As for the new album as a whole, well, we spent less time making this record than we have in 20 years. I was in Vancouver for two weeks, Dublin for three weeks, and Athens for two weeks. We started working with [producer] Jacknife Lee, the first thing I was “What do you want to hear from R.E.M., and what do you want this record to be?” and he said: “I want it to be thrilling.” I feel like there’s a confidence in the material, and a communication between the three of us that hasn’t been there for some time. We didn’t talk to each other for a couple of records-as friends or as bandmates. And we reached a point before this LP where we just sat down at a table and hashed it out. Did we come close to splitting? Over the past 27 years? About 12,000 times.
Eric Zimmerman at R.E.M. ring typed the full article out here.
Oh well that pretty much confirms the album is called "Accelerate"
Really not a fan of an album being named after a song on the album!
The only time REM did that, they produced their worst album ever!

at least they admit that ats wasn't the best it could have been, as many of us here like ats songs live more than the studio versions. hence why they released the live cds/dvd. when stipe says they weren't talking among themselves during a couple records, does that mean they literally recorded it all separately? that would help explain why reveal and ats are less than their usual greatness. but i'm really looking forward to this new one, and i think "accelerate" sums up well the music we've heard from dublin, even if i didn't like that particular song much.

happy new year's!

Thanks for posting the article for us, Lucy. And good to see you back here.
So the album title 'Accelerate' is mentioned again, which makes it likely to be the real title. Michael also confirms that Man Sized Wreath will be on it.
"I want it to be thrilling" sounds promising. I guess that makes the difference between Jacknife Lee and Pat McCarthy. It's nice of Michael to take the blame for the production and sound of last albums however you can't tell me that Pat McCarty had nothing to do with it. At the very least it would have been his task to say that it doesn't sound that good. The band which is involved in recording maybe isn't always able to judge the production in a neutral way. Isn't that why you need a producer?
It's a pity that Michael, Mike and Peter don't have things to tell to each other any more, seems like an old married couple. Their lives aren't surely that boring so I guess there should be something to talk about. I remember Peter in that Robyn Hitchcock documentary, he sounded pretty frustrated about the work with R.E.M..
I hope the band will be able to talk to each other more, I mean, I for one would love them to continue as long as possible.

"Do we have an idea yet for the middle eight?"
This may be a dumb question, but what is "the middle eight"?
I hope it means some sort of bridge or interlude between verses. This is my *only* complaint with the Dublin tunes - it's all verse/chorus/verse/chorus/verse/chorus with no real bridges. And this has been the case with much of the past few records.
Classics like Driver 8 or Fall On Me would not be as powerfull without their bridges...I hope the boys have introduced some into a few of these new tunes. It would make the material all the more stronger.

Thanks a lot for posting Lucy, it's always great to read something new from the guys.
Interesting to read that Michael wasn't nervous in the "experiment in terror" I guess he means he's not nervous of actually performing, but anxious of the crowd's reaction to the new songs?
As for the title, I love the song and if the band wants to name the album after it then that's fine with me as long as I like the music. Somehow the title does seem appropriate to their refound energy though.
